From what I understand the Pearl Harbor map was banned initially because there was too much of an advantage for the first player in a 1 on 1 tournament, not only because it seems to be a different style of game. I would also add a couple of other new maps to that list, like Omaha Beach. For games with more than two players, I can see where these maps would be fun, but in 1 on 1, the first drop most likely mean victory for the first player to play. As far as AoM, it is not really the game of risk, it is simply a game of strategy where conquering individual states is more important than holding a continent. In the end, however, I wouldn't mind AoM as much as Pearl Harbor or Omaha Beach or Battle of Actium.
actually i was pmd by yorkiepeter that i have to change my map choice because aom and pearl harbour aren't in the "spirit" of risk and that people don't understand them plus he was affraid pearl harbour or aom "specialists" would join for easy points.
it's really a silly reason to remove some maps.
anyway in AoM continents can be held just like any other map. why? because it's easier to protect your resources factory and market if you have the whole island and you get more troops because of the number of terits. but that's just another story and this is not the place.
the point is i feel it's crappy to ban certain maps because people don't understand them and there's the risk of "specialists" joining for free points.
i hate crosswords and i'd probably lose every game on that map and yet i will never comment if in a tourney i have to play on it.
anyway there's no point in taking this further since the banning of those maps is staying and thus i have retired.
