Back to Space

Postby Dukasaur on Fri Mar 22, 2024 8:59 am

Watched Return to Space yesterday.

First thing on Netflix that I've really enjoyed in a long time.

I realize Musk is annoying in some ways, but I think his dedication to a spacefaring future for humanity is genuine.

I am glad that we have someone that wants to truly travel into space and has the power to make it happen.
Was getting embarrassing Nasa using 2nd rate Hollywood shticks for PR.
Once all of America's captured Nazi scientists started dying from old age, our shit started exploding and such.

Initially the US space program had difficulty developing rockets that didn't blow up when the, "captured" scientists were still young.

There's reasons the phrase, "It's not rocket science." is a popular thing to say when trying to claim something is not difficult. The main one is it's tough to make rockets that don't explode and such.

This video is almost half an hour but it's quite good. It's part two of a discussion on the movie The Right Stuff based on the book of the same title by Tom Wolf. It mostly discusses the way the movie which was already rather long condensed things.

Every launch is a potential failure. Mr Musk and his associates blew up a few too. Here's a video of one of those.

Elon Musk just helped Trump win reelection.
Musk has claimed that it was due to wokeness and such.
I personally believe there is a quiet verbal agreement between them that if Musked helped Trump win, Trump would help fund his Mars project.
I think the U.S. will aim for Mars before we try putting people on the moon (again)

However other nations, perhaps China or possibly even Japan, has stated interest in more moon research. and possibly a manned outpost there.
Either way, to the stars

I believe going to the moon is a good way to test equipment before taking it the much greater distance to Mars. If doing some laps and lunar landings were routine, a journey to Mars would still be difficult. I would be pretty surprised if they did't start with some trips to the moon.

Sure, giver. Don't let me tell you to you need to walk before you run.

All the development from NASA lunar program is basically outdated. Additionally for all practical purposes it's like pyramid construction, theories in books.

NASA can't even return humans to the moon currently. It's all out of reach,

It's just a matter of money.

Just talking about the US, the U.S. spends 24 billion on NASA and 844 billion on war machines. Should be the reverse.

Could say similar things about most major countries.

With 844 billion you could be on Mars next year. Ganymede the year after.

None of the technological hurdles are difficult. We already know all the hazards of space and have ways to deal with all of them. Just need the coin of the realm.

Currently there's physiological hurdles to overcome before going to Mars or further.

Long missions flying U2s would mess up the pilots physically, look it up. After they landed often they needed to be carried from the plane to recover. We're not built to be cooped up in a small craft for too long.

Regular Citizens, were afraid the world was flat...So where did Columbus get his crew...From Spanish prisons...Yes, outside Columbus, travelers to the New World...were the scum of the old...It took time to cross the Atlantic...Cooped up on a ship,up,down, rocking...
-------- We have those capable of being cooped up for years, in a box...All we have to do is use these talented people....We used, dogs(Russia/Soviet Union)... Sometime I can't believe these Confed takes are actual thoughts a human had, and then felt were worth taking the time to write out and share lol.

Just send the prisoners up into the sky to die 2dimes, problem solved! Mars is now colonized with dead prisoner bodies!!! REAL PROGRESS!!!!!!

Um, he seems to be planning to build a replica of the Santa Maria to sail convicts to harvest asteroids. Not sure why he didn't write that in the first place? Sounds reasonable enough.

Some might suggest people that spend time on the international space station seem to have different issues from sailors.

There is quite a bit of research and development being done, working on improving solutions for the effects of extended periods of time spent with a lack of gravity on the human body. Plus unlike ye olde time wooden ship, I think the ISS is too large to use as a travel craft.

Who knows, some new development might happen and they will just go straight to Mars. It just seems more likely to me that a return to the moon would be part of that program.

The reason I brought up the U2 issue was, it is an example of a physical issue caused by doing something for too long. I don't know how long a flight is when it becomes an issue.

Very healthy pilots, not random people. Can fly a U2 for several hours. No problem. After being in a pressure suit flying for too long, once those same healthy pilots land they initially can't walk.

It seems the lack of gravity on the lunar missions was helpful to prevent the problem U2 pilots face. Since as you say, upon their return the astronauts walked to the quarantine trailer.

How long is a lunar mission compared to one to Mars? It might have been Elon that I first heard talking about a physiological hurdle to going to Mars.
