Those were aliens though! Pretty shitty ones at that. What sorry sack thought it'd be a great idea to invade a planet where your weakness is 70% covered by it.

Water should work pretty good on robots too, especially the early models.

You have accurately described the largest plothole in that movie! I had honestly forgotten J. Phoenix was even in in tbh, when i think back to that movie I think of the daughter and Mel Gibson and had totally blocked him out of my memory.
