Like mens basketball, are we counting that as 1 participant that earned 1 medal? Are we counting it as 12 players and 12 golds? 12 players and 1 gold? team sports are going to really mess with averages based on how you want em counted.

I just took the total number of medals earned by country X and divided by total number of athletes from country X

Don't know how they count the medals....if there's say 10 members in the woman's rugby team and they won bronze, isn't that ten bronze medals?

Just a comparative thing....off top of my head it ranged from about .05 to .15 medals per athlete for the countries I calculated....

Does it reflect the comparative effectiveness of the countries' athletes? Maybe....maybe not ....but a fun indicator nonetheless

USA and China tied for the most Gold Medals earned by any one nation. The USA finished far ahead of the field for the Total Medal Count.
