Both Copa America and Euro finals are this Sunday, July 14. Watch, if you are a sports fan.

In a "warm-up" preliminary game, the USA Mens Basketball Team barely beat South Sudan, a nation since only 2011 and a 43 point underdog, by the score of 101-100. South Sudan had a chance to win at the buzzer, too. LeBron James, at age 39, scored the winning basket.

Yes, agreed. Thanks, KB.

I prefer to talk sports and athletes here, NOT politics; we have enough other threads started for Politics.

It was pretty cool watching the US Men's gymnastics team win the bronze medal. That Fred Richard is a beast.

- and just as a sport in and of itself, handball seems the most exciting

I agree on both points, CubS. The US Women Gymnastics get most of the Headlines, but the US Men achieved a similar plateau. Handball is an interesting game, part soccer, part basketball, and more. I love to watch during the Olympics these "non-major" sports that I hardly ever watch; badminton are archery are other such example.

The host country, France, is doing well, as expected. The USA leads the medal count, the last I checked, but has relatively few Gold medals. (See below, order based on Gold Medals)

I also love the patriotism and love of country on display, not just for USA, but for other competitions.

Medals
1 China 9 7 3 19

2 France 8 10 8 26

3 Japan 8 3 4 15

4 Australia 7 6 3 16

7 United States 5 13 12 30

Justplay4fun,

I know you're not wanting to make this political, but at some point they're going to have to address these 2 dudes who think they're women in the boxing competition. Angela Carini of Italy had to stop after only 46 seconds. It's heartbreaking to watch, even if it's not your own country.

In more awesome news, USA finally won a gold in team rowing.

Is Katie Ledecky part fish?

It seems almost unreal the lead she has in some of these over all other women on the planet

Green hasn't been 'showing well' lately but he's still lethal, tricky and fast. Paddy played it smart, and I think green was out for a good 15-20 seconds before the ref figured it out which was a bit disturbing but part of the game. One of two watchable fights on that card...

The USA wins a significant number of Gold Medals today in several sports, including Fencing, Rowing, and Swimming. Here is the Medal Count (Top 10 only, #1-5 reformatted), just a few minutes ago:

Team Gold Silver Bronze Total
1China 11 7 5 23

2United States 9 14 13 36

3France 8 11 8 27

4Australia 8 6 4 18

5Japan 8 3 5 16

6 Great Britain
6 7 7 20
7South Korea
6 3 3 12
8Italy
5 7 4 16
9Canada
3 2 3 8
10Germany
2 2 2 6

The order is again given by Gold Medal total.

As far as other sports (politically and/or obliquely related) topic, I do not control what folks post.

https://olympic.ca/2024/08/01/mcintosh-wins-third-medal-of-paris-2024-gold-in-womens-200m-butterfly/
Summer McIntosh has won her third medal of Paris 2024, swimming to gold in the women’s 200m butterfly in Olympic record time of 2:03.03.

This is Canada’s first ever Olympic medal in the event. She is the first Canadian woman to win two gold medals in one edition of the Olympic Summer Games and have both of those gold medals come in individual events. She becomes the first Canadian swimmer since Alex Baumann at Los Angeles 1984 (and just the third Canadian swimmer all time) to win two gold medals in one Olympic Games.

McIntosh executed her race plan to perfection. Off the start, she was a little behind China’s Zhang Yufei, the defending Olympic champion, but McIntosh gradually closed that gap through the first half of the race. Once they turned into the third lap, McIntosh made her move. Heading into the final 50 metres, McIntosh had opened a lead of nearly three-quarters of a second. While Zhang began to fade, American Regan Smith moved into second while McIntosh continued to pull away. She ended up getting the victory by 0.81 over Smith who finished in 2:03.84. Zhang took bronze in 2:05.09. McIntosh too 0.83 off Zhang’s previous Olympic record time.

McIntosh came to Paris as a two-time world champion in the 200m butterfly, winning gold at the 2022 and 2023 World Aquatics Championships. She had posted the fastest time in the semifinals.

The 17-year-old phenom has reached the podium in each individual event in which she has raced so far at these Games. After opening with silver in the 400m freestyle on Saturday, she captured gold in the 400m individual medley on Monday.

In other news, the Canadian Women's Soccer team reach the knockout stage despite their six-point penalty. A triumph of Sysyphean magnitude!

1. Awesome job hosers!!

2. The dude fighting women is disgusting.

3. Mook - I would fucking love that!! It is on my brides actual birthday - Not sure she'd be thrilled with a boys' Vegas trip instead

Not sure how I feel about O'Malley.... indifferent?

However, Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko....THAT I would love to see. Specifically, Alexa wipe the floor with the heinous Valentina. I do NOT like her.

Kayla Harrison is my fave...followed her forever. A real warrior in life, that one .... Can't wait til she fights again

I take it your lady doesn't want to spend her bday watching grown men make each other bloody, and i guess i can respect that. At $2k a pop for the WORST seats in the house I think they got a little greedy. It is not selling out fast at all, looks like 40% of the seats are still for sale (non-resale).

I don't love Valentina, but I do appreciate striking more than grappling so have mostly enjoyed her fights over the years. No one wants to fight Kayla lol, and Dern is overrated but may have the greatest UFC ass of all time (Hall of Fame stuff)

show

I enjoy most O'Malley fights, but I could 100% see him just getting dragged to the ground and smoked there for 5 rounds in a very boring fight. No one has really done that to him succesfully, but that is like Merab's bread and butter.

Agreed on Dern....love her, and yet another female that's been dragged thru some rough personal shit yet comes out fighting and smiling...and being smoking hot :D

Derns fighting tomorrow?

Kaya just announced another fight, pending title shot. Good for her.. more money...lol

Didn't realize the tickets were that damn much. Hell.

How about a Barrett-Jackson weekend instead?? Bucket list shit. My little company has standing approval to be a vendor....just don't wanna work.

Son did SEMA last year in Vegas via Koolbak :D

I cannot recall the exact stat, but some 42 Gold Medals are up for grabs this weekend at the Paris Olympics.

Watching many events in Multi-view (on YouTubeTV) is great for such viewing; you can see several events at the same time and have the sound on one (of usually 4 views). FUN..! :D

That's what happens when Italy decides to field a paper towel as their Olympic candidate.

Funny watching a handful of boomers foam at the mouth because a blacklisted Russian sports association once banned these two women from one of its competitions based on the results of secret 'laboratory tests' that it refused to publish any details of. Stay credulous, grandpa!

This is what an actual professional boxer had to say about it:

Katzberg opened with a throw of 84.12 metres at Stade de France and was not challenged throughout the rest of the competition. He also had the second-best throw at 82.28 metres, with no other competitor reaching the 80-metre mark.

His performance, however, wasn't the only thing causing a stir, as many couldn't help but be captivated by Katzburg's absolutely elite hair and moustache game.
