Napoleon was a sadistic, megalomaniac asshole whose wars cost at least 10 million innocent lives.

If that's your measure of a great man, I suggest you sign up for some mercenary company going to go murder some natives in Angola or something.

Mexico won the First battle of Puebla (Cinco de Mayo) but lost the Second battle of Puebla. The French then took Mexico City and the Mexican government was forced into exile in the remote northern parts of Mexico. It took awhile but the French were removed.

Napoleon was a great leader and turned the French Army into a feared professional army. Prior to this the French Army was led by nobles and aristocrats.

But, the French Army had one of the worst equipment in Europe. Bad fitting boots and bad logistics...

Napoleon was one of the first major attempts to destroy the elite ruling class in Europe.

As he rose in military rank and got a closer look at the aristocracy he gained an understanding of how the international marriages of the royals had formed a ruling class all across Europe.
He wanted to dismantle that and form a Europe of allied nation states that were governed by the masses through individual republics: each independent, but allied and peaceful.

He failed at exterminating the ruling class, but essentially the European Union is what Napoleon was fighting for, just more autocratic.
Politics aside, he was a brilliant and decisive general, but was outmaneuvered by the Russians and their scorched earth tactics.
