Risk Board Game

Hi Troops!

This is an idea from left field! I am sure it must have been discussed before.

I was thinking how CC could attract more new players. It would be great if every time you logged in this site was RAMMED!

Assuming that Hasbro can be approached. Anybody think a leaflet from CC in every new Risk Board sold would help? or, if that would be possible?

CC could approach it in several ways. They would obv need an idea of how many Boards are sold in a year and then:

1. Pay an annual fee to Hasbro for this, or
2. Come to a deal with Hasbro that they get a cut of all new Subs that come from said Leaflet.
3. A mixture of both.

Has this discussion happened? Anyone else think it would offer the Player Boost needed?

We used to have Hasbro maps on here, now we don't

we now have this on the bottom of every page

I can not be 100% on this, but I am thinking CC's past interactions with Hasbro may not have been fruitful.

Did Hasbro effectively say knock it off we have our own "Official" Risk site, which CC was outdoing?

This is before my time so it's just hearsay. But basically the story goes that it happened as you say. This site was originally called a Risk site, and we got a threat of a lawsuit, forcing a lot of camouflage to reduce the resemblance to Risk, which didn't fool anyone but seems to have satisfied the legal end.

Well I remember the Classic Map which was the same as the RISK map was replaced by both a Classic Art Map and a Classic Shapes map, which worked the same as the original RISK map. Later we got the Classic Map which is used now and works also with the same connections as the RISK map.

Middle Earth was replaced by Midgard, but the connections are the same.

And this is an advice given in the Academy on a game on Classic Art:
"Tough drop. This is where you pray for a bit of help: if someone tries to take SA or Aus, they'll set up orange or yellow for you. To get to them, you'll need to take Motherwell or Calatrava (resp.) so I would put 2 on Reinhardt, one on Guston, then fort Miro to Picasso and Duchamp to Guston. Having a big group like that is really worthless, what you want to do is spread out, and to start, that usually means moving your troops to opposite sides. You might attack that single from Guston so you can afford to miss a card later, but it's not strictly necessary. I just like to take singles when I can get them in 8 player games."

Those names from the Artists can now be replaced by names of the cities.

This all makes perfect sense Troops! Ty for the info! Very informative. I was aware of some of it. Not all though.

If this could be approached differently from before, then CC may have a chance.

Board Games will never compete with Games Consoles.

Specialist Gaming Sites like CC will never compete with Board Game Manufacturers. But will put together a much better offering than any Board Game Manufacturer of Risk (Hasbro).

There simply must be money in collaboration here. Because, sales of the Board Game and New players on CC would go through the roof if this was done correctly. And it woulddn't take much to make it happen.

All very interestng stuff.

Yes, very interesting, all of this. I did read some of that discussion from 2008, and that too is interesting. I am assuming that Hasbro, who now owns the Risk game concept, wanted TOO MUCH $$ from lackattack and that is why that kind of "deal" never went forward.

I assumed that someone would have recall of those days and what happened. Thanks for ALL that, Iron Maid. :D

Yes, the board game and a website like CC are in some ways competition, BUT this site actually offers many advantages. When was the last time any of you have actually played the BOARD (physical or hard) version of this game? I doubt many have recently. The game takes a long time to play (a complaint from my childhood) and if someone had to leave (to go home, for example) there was not a really fair way to divide the territories, cards, troops, etc.

I played many a game about 4-5 years ago when I taught at public high school and had a games club, an evolution from my Chess Club. However, in the past few years I got very few students who wanted to play chess and NO ONE wanted to play a game of Risk that would take the ENTIRE 90 minutes allotted for the meeting and game play. We played lots of the Card Game Coup and some of its variations. Another teacher was into many different board games that he offered and taught. Ticket to Ride and Pandemic (I may have the names a bit confused here, as these were NOT MY board games) were among the more popular options. Most of these could be played quickly, under 30 minutes, even with 4-7 players. The speed of the completion of the game, easy to learn, but COMPLEX enough to make players THINK a bit were and are, in my assessments, the key features.

The 24 hour feature does offer many advantages, but for many younger players used to nearly instant gratification of internet offerings, this game on this site in 24 hours is TOO SLOW, imo, as I stated in other threads on improving or suggestions for this website (e.g., CC is Declining Again!).

Chess and Risk demand commitment to learn and to play, and few students were willing to do both to learn the games and become proficient. I even hooked up a Risk CD to a presentation device in my classroom and projected game play on a large white board (electronic one) and that did not generate enough interest in Risk.

BTW: I attracted two other groups of students on a Friday afternoon from 3:00 until 4:30. They was a group of some 5-8 playing Dungeons and Dragons and another smaller group who waited for friends and/or socialized and or played on or access the computers in the Library where we met. I moved from my classroom to the Library in order to accommodate the 20 or so students (and a few male teachers) who came to my classroom. We had FUN and did socialize a BIT, and those things to me were important to me. They did not have their face buried in a cell phone while not talking to anyone (or very few) sitting near them.

My thoughts on this is that it is CC that need to make the running on it. Hasbro has been doing rather well recently, apparently Board Games are Booming!

The way to go about this, is, CC need to offer Hasbro something they do not have at the moment. A quality online portal for one of their board games. The CC model could be copied by Hasbro for all their other games and they would keep the profits on that. CC would benefit by getting ALOT of new players. CC should give away a lot to get this.

As an example, CC say to Hasbro, not only will we share our expertise on the online website gaming market, for you to use on your other boardgames. If we double the size of our profits off the back of using the Risk branding and you promoting our website in boardgames. We will give you 49% of the company. That is collusion. That is the pitch.

Whats better, Profits as they are now, or, the same profits with an extra 60% of players? and the infinite chance to grow off the back of Hasbro support?

It is a no brainer CC!

As a Corporate Exec in my previous life, I could probably sell that!

But you can play the official Hasbro Risk online just not on this site, Hasbro will promote their own game over a tribute site.

It seems that Hasbro has already gone online with Risk and would not want to "share" with CC.

Here is information, most of which you likely know, BUT...

Risk is a strategy board game of diplomacy, conflict and conquest[1] for two to six players. The standard version is played on a board depicting a political map of the world, divided into forty-two territories, which are grouped into six continents. Turns rotate among players who control armies of playing pieces with which they attempt to capture territories from other players, with results determined by dice rolls. Players may form and dissolve alliances during the course of the game. The goal of the game is to occupy every territory on the board and, in doing so, eliminate the other players.[2] The game can be lengthy, requiring several hours to multiple days to finish. European versions are structured so that each player has a limited "secret mission" objective that shortens the game.

Risk was invented in 1957 by Albert Lamorisse, a French filmmaker, and it became one of the most popular board games in history, inspiring other popular games such as Axis & Allies and Settlers of Catan. The simple rules but complex interactions make it appealing to adults as well as children and families. It is still in production by Hasbro with numerous editions and variants with popular media themes and different rules including PC software versions, video games, and mobile apps.

I see mobile apps as the "Holy Grail" that CC could not develop and thus could not attract lots of new players.

I know that CC offers many things, such as Clans and many maps. I have not checked the Hasbro online versions at this time. I did join 1-2 other Risk sites, but decided that they were NOT worth my time (and I did not contemplate spending more money elsewhere when I enjoy CC.)

CC does have a mobile app though, it's just really basic

Actually, the connections are different.

Magadan-Manilla is missing (Kamchatka-Mongolia).
