Social Immagination

Postby what,me worry? on Sun Jun 23, 2019 5:42 pm

I'll put my John Lennon glasses on...

Imagine if mods responded
to forum requests
instead of just banning

it's easy if you try

Owners can raise some hell below them

Imagine all the CC community being satisfied with this product
It isn't hard to do

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FX4D1jU2m8

I invite everyone to play the piano and sing a better version of this

Imagine if we could overcome human incompetence and laziness to continue making each community better than we found it

I knew a friend who had a mental disorder once tell me about the Peter Principle. Good point.

It doesn't happen often, but here I am agreeing with Nomad. Somebody who can't be trusted to communicate with proper spelling and grammar shouldn't be lecturing others about incompetence or laziness. In fact, he shouldn't be lecturing, period.

Meaning someone who doesn't even know that a comma is normally followed by a space.

There are many people with English not as their first language, speech impediments, and learning disorders (autism). Among these are some of the most brilliant throughout history. You would throw away all of their input because this site doesn't have the proper tools such as, spell check?

Language is a group of utterances that communicate an idea. You understood my ideas and straw-maned instead of addressing the issue. This makes you an asshat. Good job, dummy <--- comma

Thanks for doing that, nomad. This is actually pretty funny, because the truth is until now I didn't even know he had added the comments. I thought he just quoted my message and forgot to actually respond.

what,me worry? wrote:There are many people with English not as their first language, speech impediments, and learning disorders (autism). First of all, dummy, (may I call you that?) if you were paying attention at in the forums the last thousand years, you would know that English is not my first language. I am an immigrant. So don't give me this "some people can't speak English" bullshit. There are many people on this site -- benga, dakky21, Mad777 come immediately to mind -- who do have struggles with the English language. When I communicate with them, I make full allowance for the fact that they may be struggling to express what they really mean. I have full respect for them.

You are not an immigrant. You are a native-born American, raised and educated in an English speaking country, who is perfectly capable of speaking English well and simply too fucking lazy to do so. I do not have respect for you.

Now that we have that out of the way, on to some of your other nonsense.

You would throw away all of their input because this site doesn't have the proper tools such as, spell check?

Why on earth would the site have a spell checker? Every browser already has a spell-checker; it would be completely redundant for websites to duplicate that effort.

Language is a group of utterances that communicate an idea.

Language is more than a group of utterances. Language is a social contract. The speaker and the listener, or the writer and the reader, contract with each other to broaden their mutual understanding, and the responsibility for doing so is mutual. One does not simply spew forth random words like vomit from a drunkard and expect others to do all of the heavy lifting of teasing out some meaning. (Well, unless one has the stature of James Joyce, and then one can get away with that shit. Even then, however, some signposts to the location of the meaning have to be provided.) The writer and the reader have a mutual contract to make sure some cognition takes place, and if one can't be bothered to do his share, then the other probably can't be bothered either.

You understood my ideas

No, actually, as a point of fact I did not understand. Your OP was so chaotic as to yield no precise meaning. As far as I can tell, you are whining about your forum requests not being honoured by the mods. Without you being more specific, I don't know what forum requests were not responded to. Your last forum request, about the number of people who have you foed, I did respond to by explaining we have no way of being able to provide you with that information. There literally is no mod button which allows us to look at people's foe lists.

Prior to that, the last forum request I remember from you was you whining about why you can't use the n-word. That also received plenty of answers, including one from the highest-ranking mod, TeeGee, so you can say that wasn't responded to.

So, no, actually I have no idea whatsoever what non-responsive mods you are whining about now.

I am annoyed, however, that you tried to drag John Lennon, whom I like very much, into your bowl of splooge.

and straw-maned instead of addressing the issue.

I constructed no mane of straw! What is a straw-mane, anyway? Is that what the Cowardly Lion gets after wrestling with the Scarecrow?

Okay, seriously, in this case I actually am able to deduce that you wanted to communicate the word "strawman" and were simply too clever to spell it correctly. I constructed no strawmen, either. I simply pointed out that if you are too lazy to communicate with precision, others will be too lazy to give much thought to your ideas.

People make mistakes. No problem. Maybe you thought "Imagination" is spelled with two m's, or maybe you were typing quickly and made an error. Completely understandable. But it was pointed out to you, and you haven't fixed it. That is not completely understandable. It's as if someone tells you that your zipper is down in public, and you keep walking and don't bother to pull it up. It reveals total contempt for others. If you have total contempt for others, please do expect that it will be reciprocated.

I do speak English better now. My Czech is frozen at a little kid level. All my adult life is in Canada.

It always pisses me off that I can't have a decent political argument in Czech, because I just don't know the words for philosophical or economic ideas. With so few chances to practise, it never gets any better.
