100 Coding Hours

Postby Razorvich on Mon Oct 17, 2016 9:09 am

If there were 100 coding hours available to improve the site... what would the priorities be?

Merging the chats?
Implementing one/some/all of the suggestions?
Allocating every new member to a clan or tribe? (like a sorting hat)
Fix the dice to be even more random?
Bigger avitars?
More/less forums?
Phone app?
Bug fixes?
Something else?

So what would be at the top of the list?

phone app should be the number one priority of this site. the rest should be spent on suggestions such as DIVIDING THE MAPS into categories, that could be used with the left over :30 seconds, when the phone/tablet app is complete... clans have done enough to ruin the site, we shouldn't spend any more time on anything they want done...-BJ

At the very top of the list would be finally implementing some kind of map-categorization in Join A Game and Game Finder, so that people aren't picking from a full dump of the 250 maps but from subcategories of the type of map they are interested in.

At the same time, Join a Game and Game Finder need to have a built-in "basic" template, with all the niche settings greyed out, so people who say they are bewildered by the many settings can look for a "basic game of Risk" as so many of them whine about. Flat rate or escalating only, no fog, no trench, adjacent or chained forts only, no complex maps.

After that, the highest priority is either the long-promised sitting tool, or a sitting tracker, so we know with certainty if someone is on their primary account or not, and so cases of sitting abuse can be adjudicated without guesswork.

These are not just my opinion. They have been named by many people as the highest priorities for at least five years now, possibly more.

Besides those, a lot of people would name the phone app as the highest priority, but at least five programmers now have tried and failed to build one, so I don't think it would be productive to sink more time into what would probably be another failed attempt.

this is something that seems so simple to do. from here you can move on to unlocking sets of maps after completing x games or whatever. however, this literally should have been done YEARS ago, when it was first suggested. this takes care of the whole "elimination" of maps debate and makes it easier on the eyes and brains for new members and old, alike...

this is information i was not privy to. this would be good for the community to know, vs. it seeming as if they just didn't care... in those regards, my top REALISTIC GOAL is the same as your number. DREAM CODING is for the phone. the black jesus has spoken.-Bj

Bigger avitars? NO
More/less forums? NO
Phone app? NO - because even if you spent 100 hours on it you'd be less than half done
Bug fixes? As a general rule, bugs should get fixed, yes. That shouldn't be held against our 100 fun hours.
Something else?

Agree with Duk on some good places to start. i have always thought incorporating maprank would be a good hook for casual users that aren't going to go to great lengths to install extra tools, but would be very interested to see their career performance on their favorite maps and settings without doing a bunch of extra work. it seems like the kind of thing a new user would just expect to be there in this day and age.

------1st)...Like Duk and MR. A. BELL...I also only use a phone to call and talk to people...But Jesus Noir is right...A phone app is numero uno on the hit parade hear in the 21st century...If we want our numbers back up to the 10's of 1,000's... :D :D :D I mean come on Duk...4 or 5 people have tried...Edison tried 10,000 times and failed before he perfected the light bulb...Now a days...People suck at their first try at something...Give up...DAMN WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OLD ,NEVER GIVE UP SPIRIT!!!! :(
------2nd)...Bring back old freestyle play...return speed games to only 5 min. per turn, and allow Flame Wars...If people don't like it...No one is forcing them to look at that section...Get rid of C and A,that will take care of the cry babies chasing people away...;)
------3rd)...Holiday dice...bring back the Holiday dice... =D> =D> =D> ... :D ConfederateSS.out!(The Blue and Silver Rebellion)... :D

1. Phone app (not realistic but still a priority if feasible)
2. Map sorting
3. Map rank integrated
4. Bug fixes / making previous updates feel more completed
5. Lag / site time out / performance improvements

Do people actually still have this problem? I wonder how much is their internet provider because I never have this problem myself.

I very rarely have any issues, but compared to almost every other site I visit this is probably the worst for it (even tho for me it's minor). But from what I am told from others, there are people who are severely affected by it much more than I experience. I guess maybe some of these people left but it would be nice to have it be a non issue completely so new people don't experience it and leave

Same here :)

1) Map sorting
2) Map rank
3) better follow up with suggestion forum

Phone app? Well perhaps starting with a tablet app....phone doesn't sound the best tool to play only if you have no choice (like a Hurricane that comes toward you and shut the power down for few days 8-) )

not coding necessary, but if there were 100 hour/man available i would make a video tutorial for newbs first, showing them how to play, what's available and everything that could get them excited to stay.

then with the hours left work in the interface to make it more user friendly.

and if there are more hours left i'd work on a way to jump start speed games, maybe creating a rank restricted system so that high rankers would start more speed games.

this one is simple... change the rules back to what they were... when they changed, we lost almost a full 1/3 of the site overnight... they refuse to acknowledge this or to change it back. 100% agree with you on this one...-Bj

What rule got changed? and when?

I never remember us having rank restrictions on games, but I am probably wrong, very very rarely do I play speed games

OMG, dear hearts please don't fight. You will make the baby jesus cry if you do. Seeing a couple fight in public is soooo sad, especially when there are children present. Won't one of you think about the children?

1. Make site mobile friendly - is possible, why can other sites do it?
2. Map rank, and a few other little fun tools
3. A tutorial to guide new players. In form of a video ideally.

I'm going to agree with all this. Except the phone thing. I for one am glad Edison didn't stop after five attempts at creating a functioning light bulb.

Also, if someone could somehow create a code that forces wham to sell the site, I could actually play a game again and return to caring about more than just the forums on this site... but that's probably asking too much.

Post here... if sorting maps will ever happen it will start with the community first, sorting them...coder isn't gunna spend time sorting for us, just putting the ones we tell them too in the right spot! :D Post and I'll revise, we need input for the categories to get accurate... it's a mess at the moment

5. Lag / site time out / performance improvements

On the main note of this thread... This is the order i'd agree with

EDIT: Also I would add; Tabs on the side of the screen, on your game menu, to list active tournaments you are in (click one button, search for all games in tourny, go to tourny thread, etc). Also have a spot of tourny organizers, to quick jump to tournies they are running

I see many people here saying map rank should be one of the priority.
I think if there is 100 coding hours available for CC, the priority should be something that improve CC for everyone, and be on something that we use everyday.
Who need map rank except people chasing the cross map medal and people organizing clan wars ? Only experienced players need it. I am sure a vast majority of people on CC never heard of map rank or care about it.

Something that we use everyday are the pages Join Games, Start Games and Game Finder.
Therefore a map sorting that would be used to improve the Start Games page so that we can have a simple start game with only non complex map, and an "advanced" start game page, with all maps, would be a good idea, if we believe in the theory that the complexity of CC is repelling new players.

I'd also love to see an update of the Join Games page, because I believe most of the tabs under this page are completely useless, and an update of the Join Games page would help fill the games faster which is definitely a problem nowadays, especially for games with a lot of players. I made a sugg for that here.

And of course the phone app.

Everyone has heard of having player statistics, if not specifically map rank. It's a common element of any game. People care how many times they've won on their favorite map / settings whether they've played 10 games or 40000, that information should be readily available.
