It is an unsolicited message delivered via an electronic message system. The definition doesn't say that it has to be computer generated. It says a message sent using electronic message system such as email, but would include forums, walls, sms etc.
It is often automatically generated, processed or sent, but doesn't have to be to fit the definition of spam.
BTW, I like getting these invites, so no problem from me, but it is technically spam.
Agreed, and nicely said. It is spam, but it's not much of an issue here.
Duk- would an opt-in or out feature be feasible for wall stuff like this?
I have no idea.
I suppose it's theoretically possible to have some kind of "exclusive" filter on wall posts like you can on gmail, where nobody can contact you until they've been previously authorized.
Whether the owner would spend his time programming it? I'd be doubtful. Seems like a a lot of work for very dubious gain. His position is that there are already too many personalized options on CC, and each one adds to the complexity of code and the number of potential bugs.
Would I as a member of the community be in favour of it? Absolutely not. From the point of view of community-building, I think the relatively egalitarian nature of wall posts and PMs is a good thing. Having more obstacles to communication would be a bad thing. I think it's good that people have the option to extend unsolicited comments to other members of the community. If someone gets to be a pain in the ass, you can foe them, and if they get to be a really BIG pain in the ass they can be banned. Barring a level of annoyance sufficient to justify foeing or a ban, I think it's good for the community that random people you don't even know can pass by and say, "hey, come join my tournament" or "I'm starting a new clan" or "I think there's a thread in the Suggestions forum I'd like your opinion on."
