Ability to delete or modify a game chat post

Postby universalchiro on Thu May 29, 2014 6:44 pm

Concise description:
  • Just like in the Forums, the ability to have the same control on information that is sent out publicly in Game Chat would be beneficial. If an errant public statement goes out, one has the ability to delete or modify the game chat message. If an untimely venting post goes public because of bad rolls, when calmer later, can delete the message.

Specifics/Details:
  • After typing a message and clicking "enter" sending the message to game chat, then an "x" and an "edit" icon appears next to your post.
*The "x" button allows one to delete their message.
*The "edit" button allows one to modify their message.
*Once the game is archived, no additional game chats can be deleted, modified or added.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Too often in 1v1 games an accidental note to oneself is sent out for all to see. The ability to retract, modify the note will save a lot of headaches. For example: Let's say you just rolled 0-8 and want to vent to yourself, but not seem like a whiner and complainer to your opponent, so in hast you type; "blasted I just rolled 0-8, what the heck is going on!!!" and hit enter. Then realize the statement went public. Now you have to sheepishly do a bunch of damage control, apologizing, etc. If there was a "x" icon, then you could just quickly delete the message. Problem solved.

Another example: Let's say you are typing notes to teammates and accidentally post a public message revealing your hidden information for all to see. You can relax, for Conquer Club has just implemented the "x" button and now you can delete this private information.
Another example: Let's say you are typing notes to your teammates and type the wrong region number for suggested drop/attack/fort. Instead of having to retype the information, you just modify with the "edit" icon.

This will improve public relations with players and increase the enjoyment of the game. For often when someone rolls 0-8, they are immediately pissed off and may vent in public chat about how stinking lucky the other player is with the rolls. Well, then let's say about 10-15 minutes goes bye and that player that rolled 0-8 with a knee jerk reaction in Game Chat, could then go back to game chat and delete the message before the other player logs on to see the complaining post. Often we wish we could take back what we say or wrote, with this addition to game chat, we can get a second chance at behaving with admirable character with calmer wits about us.

How 'bout CC focuses on growth and retaining an optimal amount of customers through more cost-effective means?

Or they could burn resources revamping the chat boxes to please a few users who don't have the sense to be more careful when typing.

@BBS: Look at you pointing fingers and assessing ridicule again. Rather than being negative most of the time, why don't you do something useful for a change and post a suggestion for a positive result instead of pointing out the negatives. Don't be a debbie downer, a half empty glass guy all the time. Sometimes you just come across as a troll.

You are foed again.

I have often wanted to be able to edit my game chat throughout the years - so I totally love the idea of this suggestion.

That said - I think it's highly unlikely that the admins would ever prioritize this feature above all of the other things they are working on to improve the site and attract new users.

I don't see it being necessary really.. If you say something you regret just apologise. If you accidentally leak team chat then don't be dumb.

Kaksavel: Timmy, truce? 1 round notice?
Timmy: OK, I accept

5 rounds later....

Kaskavel assaulted Sidney and conquered it from Timmy

Kaksavel: Timmy, truce? 1 round notice?
Timmy: OK, I accept
Timmy:What are you doing?

5 minutes later

Kaksavel: Timmy, can I have Australia? And I will not break Asia if you ever take it
Timmy: OK, I accept
Timmy: What are you doing?
kaskavel: Fine, my friend, and you?

Just make the edit possible unless someone else type smthg, or make the edit possible for only 10-15 mins and it's fine.
I also often want to edit my game chat, mainly for typo/spelling mistake, it always annoys me I can't correct them in game chat.
It would be nice.

But it's of course a minor improvement.

You can just type out the correction though, it doesn't really warrant a new implementation.

I think Kaskavel gives a great reason as to why this shouldn't happen.

Bah, I think it is a good idea in fact, just wanted to make some fun. A time limit to change the post should be fine

But what's the point? To simply fix a typo? There are better things that could be implemented.

Fix an embarassing typo or hide self or team info misplaced in public. That's it, no more no less. It is a good thing. Not a devastating improvement to the site's quality but a small improvement nevertheless

I suppose so. For me, it depends how much work would be required and how it would affect the aesthetics of the game chat.

This would definitely need to be a part of this suggestion. Without this amendment, this feature could be abused.

Possible scenarios:

Diplomacy talks can be edited and revealing info in fog games can also be edited or erased? Erased but as long as the intended recipient was able to read it first or declare they never agreed to anything or claim they said a different proposal.

player X: hey guys, player Y has 100 troops in Dubai while we are attacking each other. Let's have a truce and go after him for 5 rounds until he is weakened.
player Z: yes.
player W: agreed.
player X: since we are all here, let's delete this before he gets online so he won't get mad at us. I will delete mine (this, as long as they are still within the time frame of being able to delete or edit their game post).

or player X can just edit it.

player X: I am having the worst dice in this game. 15v5 and it ends with 3v4! Don't you just hate it when that happens to you?
player Z: yes.
player W: agreed.

One or all of them can delete or edit out what he said. Should players learn to take snapshots now as well if in case one of the players declares a different scenario or if they had a fallout between each other and now want to make up stories of what they did but the game chat has all been erased or edited already?

=================

player X: I have a lot of games where I am about to win. I am going to experiment and test something. I am going to make a lot of speed games now and point dump many of them. Feel free to join them. I am going to delete this message after 30 seconds so no one can report this game.

player X: this is not player X. This is his wife and I think you are a ^&$@#@.

player X: player Y is a cheat! Do not trust him! He breaks truces and is a multi!

player X: I know the password for player Y! It's 123456! His real name is "John Doe".

So all these kind of remarks can be trolled in one or several games and then the person can just erase or edit it out, that is, if he really has nothing to do in his spare time.

This kind of things can already be done using PM to selected people in a game. We are not really creating a new abuse by allowing this feature.
Only merely allowing another way to do it. And even though, I don't think it will be such a problem, how many times does it happen that several people of a game are currently typing and reading the chat, so that the editing will still be possible for the 1st player?

Furthermore, simple make the feature in a way that, if another player write anything, previous can't edit. And it is fine.

Speed games.

It would be nice to be able to edit team chat, since if you're a game leader, you might make extensive notes in the chat, then see something and are like, "no, actually, do this", but I don't see how it is necessary to be able to edit public chat. It has no purpose imo.

Just be careful with the team/note to self feature. We all make those mistakes, but it's never had a deadly impact on my game. If your opponent is good, chances are, they will have figured out your strategy anyway. I might make notes in non-team fog games "pink is on x,y and z" if I can't see that in my snaps, but a fort or failed attack gave it away, but that's it.

If message accident ly goes public in chat, one has time to correct only before another player post public game chat, then its locked in. This solves Achilles nefarious players.
If message is not public in game chat, one has till the end of game to edit.

Any other problems?
Speed games, same rules apply.

There is also the other problem

"Blue, want to make a truce between Dakar and Moscow with 2 rounds notice? Before green takes Delhi and pushes red towards Astana. If you agree blue, move your stack from Stockholme to Berlin since you only need to fear an attack from Cairo from green now, unless yellow advances through Nairobi to kill the red stack in Johanesburg"
And his next line...
" Sorry, I meant *Madrid* and *cyan* "
AAAAAAAAAAAA.........What did he want to say????????

I think this is a great idea. Not for accidentally not checking that box, but for making a mistake in calling out a region number (or the likes) only to realize you made a mistake and then wondering if your teammate(s) will read through the rest to figure out you tried to correct yourself 2 lines below. Sometimes, its too late.

Seems like a super easy thing to implement and can't see this taking too many resources to do so. The plus sides are great and seemingly easy, the downsides are... let's just keep it as it is and ignore the fault.

Many times I wish that I could edit a post right after i hit enter only to backtrack and write in all caps... "WAIT>>> CORRECTION".

Kinda seems like a no brainer in comparison w/ the others and been thinking about this from the day i joined the club although never mentioned it. great suggestion.

Yes, but the rules say that diplomacy is allowed in game chat, so anyone who did what ka said would not technically be violating the rules, and therefore it would not be abuse. So you can be sure that people will do it.

And even though, I don't think it will be such a problem, how many times does it happen that several people of a game are currently typing and reading the chat, so that the editing will still be possible for the 1st player?

I've seen it happen, though not often. It can be common when you have someone who lives in southeast Asia and is many time zones off of the rest of his/her opponents.

Furthermore, simple make the feature in a way that, if another player write anything, previous can't edit. And it is fine.

That negates the obvious methods of abuse, but I wouldn't be instantly confident that it couldn't be misused. For example, imagine a scenario where Player X says to Player Y: "If you're around, respond, and then I'll tell you what we should do." Player Y responds, "I'm here," after which Player X posts his game plan and then deletes it five minutes later, after he's confident Player Y has seen it. Also, we would have to guard against the possibility that everyone will delete their last comment, allowing the person who made the first comment to then delete theirs. (So the system would have to know that it has been "responded" to even if the "response" is no longer stored in the server. This would be much easier if you could only edit and not delete.)

Main use I see for this is on a big hive game there have been a lot of times where something like this has happened to me:

Drop A3 attack A4 advance
Drop B1 attack B2 no advance
Drop C1 attack C2 no advance
Oops I meant do XYZ

But as teammate is reading it, and there are 20 lines of such instructions,
And they go line by line sometimes it's happened that they don't notice the correction the line after.

It certainly makes sense to me to at least implement it for team chat. Though then it really makes me wonder whether it's worth the implementation effort.
