Auto-Tournament Reserve Players

Postby cooldeals on Tue Jan 21, 2014 12:48 pm

Concise description:
  • Add Reserves to Auto-Tournaments

Specifics/Details:
  • Currently players who cannot accept invites just forfeit in an auto-tournament.
  • I propose that if a player has to miss an invite for any reason he/she is kicked from the tournament and immediately replaced with a reserve from the reserve list
  • This will mean you actually have to play games to win in a tournament
  • Reserve players would get free entry if used as an incentive to sign up
  • Admins could set the number of reserves required from 0-? This way speed tournaments or all premium tournaments would not be required to have reserves to start if they didn't feel it was necessary.

Examples
  • In the following tournament you will see that the leading player has 10 wins but has only played 5 games. He had the good fortune of being paired with a freemium player with no open game slots and got 5 instant wins 128 Person Auto Tourney. This is not fair to the other 127 players.
  • In this tournament all games are supposed to be 6 player. You get a point for winning a 6 player game. However, most all the games are missing players. This means that a person winning a 4 person game gets the same points for a person winning a 6 person game. Additionally tiebreakers for tournaments are determined by how many rounds it took to win a game. So a player winning a 4 person game not only has less competition but will likely win in fewer rounds and have his win valued higher in a tie-breaker.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • It's been established practice in regular tournaments to use reserves as FREE WINS eliminate the competitiveness of a tournament
  • Even if auto-tournaments are restricted to premium only players people could turn freemium, be banned, etc causing the need for reserve players.

Alternatively, I guess it could possibly be programmed so that if someone cannot accept an invite the tournament reappears on the tournaments page requesting reserves before it continues.

Something definitely needs to change. Maybe freemiums can't join auto tournaments unless they have a slot free. And there should be more warning to them that if they join the tourney, they NEED to keep a slot open.

Reserves are a good backup plan, but there's more that can be done upfront to prevent this problem, too.

I'd be in favor of them programming a HOLD on players games for freemium. If they join a tournament they have to have X slots open and they can only be filled by tournament games. So say this tournament takes 3 slots they can only have 1 active non-tournament game.

The problem is what happens if someone turns freemie after a tournament starts. Anyone coming from premium usually has way more than 4 games.

I like cooldeals first suggestion.

When the batch runs and wants to start the autotournament...it first checks if every player is eligible for the tournament and have enough slots available. If not, they are kicked out of the tournament, maybe get an email to tell them to buy premium, and then the autotournament goes back to the list with a 28/32 and wait for 4 more people to join it. And maybe it has to run through this a couple of times, but eventually it will kick off with players that are all eligible.

It must be relatively simple to program, and the only downside is it takes slightly longer to start the tournaments, but it will be a much better event once it starts.

I'm not really hearing any dissent on this. It's obviously not as hot a topic because not everyone plays auto-tournaments, but it definitely seems like it should be a priority when we have tournaments with 500+ people there's almost a guarantee people will be giving away free games.

Yeah. I don't have dissent at the idea, but like Swifte said, it's not really getting to the root of the problem. We've started some more discussion in the TD Forum about this, so let me report back when something develops there.

If the TD's are on this then this thread may not be needed. I have full faith in you guys. I didn't know how involved the TD's were allowed to be in the Auto's.

Not much to start with, but becoming more involved...

Yes, this. A reappearance on the tourney page when seeking legit matches would be a good option I think.
