?Official? Dungeons and Dragons Mafia

Postby edocsil on Wed Jul 31, 2013 4:39 pm

I was bouncing around the idea of hosting another game once my summer classes are over, and perhaps running it by the mods as a Official Game. I was thinking a DnD based mafia (3.5e if you're a geek) of ~15 players. Each player would be a class and alignment, this may not make a ton of sense if you don't know how the alignment works, but basically it would remove the traditional town/scum roles (lawful, neutral, chaotic) and (good, neutral, evil) are the 2 alignment types

The majority of players would be (neutral, good), a modest number of (neutral, neutral) and a smaller group of (something, evil). The (neutral, good) can all win together and would be "town". The (lawful, good) and the (chaotic, good) would win with town but not with each other. (lawful, evil) and (neutral, evil) would represent the scum. (Chaotic, evil) would be something that could only win by itself. Some sort of solo dominator, SK, Cult, Arsonist, or other such thing is possible.

Basically lawful can't win with chaotic, and evil can't win with good, unless all good and evil living are lawful. Good and lawful players would not have to survive to win, so long as their WC was met before the game ended. The more "extreme" a role is the more powerful it would be. (Chaotic, good/evil) would both have powerful abilities, while (neutral, neutral) would have it's primary power in the vote and something to help them survive. (Lawfull, good/evil) would be somewhere in between in terms of power.

Class/race would just be for flavor primarily. Fighters behead people, sorcerers shoot lightning and shit, and dragons are fricken hard to kill.

Each "day" would be a new adventure in an extended campaign, or for those unfamiliar with DnD an adventure is a week or so of in game time with some sort of boss/dungeon that is completed. This would be mostly just for storytelling purposes.

Thoughts/otherwise? How much interest is there in this sort of game?

yup sounds interesting! Baldur's Gate perhaps, or maybe something along the lines of Drittz Du'Urden?

All comes from the lore of DnD so yes to some extent. I won't say much, I want the story to be a surprise, but humans, dwarves, elves (drow), goblins and dragons are currently on the table with the plot I have cooked up.

Also, aage that comic is pure gold.

I'm fine with this game being Official, and I'll even put up prizes for it. edoc, when you're preparing for this game, but before you launch it, send me a PM and we can discuss.

I would be interested, though I too do not have flavor knowledge. Either way, I support this idea :D

At its basics you need to understand alignment, which I've laid out already, and be ready for a story. In DnD the whole story is told by a Dungeon Master (DM) and the DM makes his own little universe. If you have ready a fantasy book, well just about ever, that's all the background you will need to play. There are a few races unique to DnD, but not many. Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes and Haflings and humans make up 90% of most characters.

One of the last campaigns we ran (I was pretty successful and ran a series of RPG campaigns non-stop for nearly 10 years) was a party where everyone in the party played a woodwind instrument.

We had a half-orc who played the bagpipes. I was a paladin, but a sworn pacifist and I would just heal during battles. Our band was called the Divine Wind (as in Kamikaze). We would only take quests if they let us play a gig after and the DM had this epic quest where we saved the town for destruction and then we got to play for the whole town.

Of course, I'd suggest being careful about how many neutral characters you put in there. Too many and they might just become apathetic towards endgame and just let lawful and evil NK each other and not lynch.

I was thinking no more than 3 personally. Also swapping around the Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic, will really prevent them from just hanging around.
