persianempire

The accused are suspected of:

offensive avatar

this guy has the skull and bones symbol of the SS, the third reich's deadliest and most vicious corpse responsible of tons of death and deportation to work camps during WW2.

I've asked him 3 times to remove it, he acts as if he didn't know what I was talking about but he clearly does, no chance he found that by mistake on google.

since he doesn't want to listen, can some authority ask him to? thanks

Ok, now I have to ask...

I read on persianempire's profile a naughty reference towards GeneralRisk who I believe is in your clan? This does not prove anything of course but it suggests the possibility of an ulterior motive. Is there any connection between clan activity/loyalty and this person?
The reason I ask is because as of late I have been harassed by people whom I have never even met before because I got in a dispute with one of their "cronies". Please know that I am not insinuating anything because I don't know either you or the accused and therefore have no character reference whatsoever. I just want to point out how it may look to some.

no funky.
In fact to tell the truth, general risk has had big problems in our clan because he has tried to flag some nazi symbols on his signature. So when I saw that on persianempire's profile I thought that maybe him and generalrisk shared this common fucked up interest or bad sense of humour, I still didn't figure out which one it is.
Anyway, in europe we don't make jokes about nazi/SS and we do't tolerate this type of symbols.

other than this, I have absolutely no problem with persianempire, he seems to be a decent guy, so I wonder what this is about.

Im just saying, persianempire apparently lives in Canada. I also read your wall posts and he keeps playing it off, which if he knew it was symbolic of the SS, then that is terrible, but if he legitimatly does not know about it's other meaning, then I would just say that he shouldnt have to change it, even though it may be offensive to some people, he does not represent the same cause that the SS did and so I dont think he needs to change it just because some may take offense.

Thanks for the explanation betiko, I ,for one, take you for your word.
Persian, couldn't it be that betiko didn't make the connection between your avi and it's significance until now? The longevity of your avatar seems to be beside the point if it's on par with a swastika because I know for a fact that those are a no-no. It just seems that up until now you have gone under the radar. Not anyone's fault but It seems as a gesture of goodwill you could change it considering the circumstances? Betiko truly doesn't sound like he has a problem with you personally, just your avatar.

I know betiko through the mafia forums, and for some reason I dont think he would do this out of spite for his clan. It is only a game, and he seems to grasp that pretty well as far as mafia, so I dont think he would bash your avatar just because his clan has lost against you. It is not a gross waste of cc resources as he takes offense to it and if there is offense taken then he has a right to report it, as he plays the site just as you do. I can understand you dont want to get rid of your avatar, but I dont see why you think it is a waste of time. Please try not to heat the topic up. Everybody can keep their heads cool and not turn this into a fight.

A better picture of Himmler's hat from a dead on angle CLEARLY shows it is the same one.

Image

On top of that, I looked up "Skull and bones" for the result I expected. After 10 pages, that were 0 results even remotely similar to the one pictured above. I am sorry, but for him not to know its meaning would be a little ridiculous in my opinion. You know, its kind of funny in a warped sense. Considering 10 pages of skulls only showed pirate flags, etc. Not one person posted the skull and bones captured above. Not only would it take a VERY large amount of time to find these in the mess that is google pictures (only looking up "skull and bones") but it would be impossible to find a picture that didnt mention Himmler, or at least coming across a picture mentioning him.

The only way he could have possibly found a picture with the skull and bones in this fashion without pouring hours into it would be to directly look up something having to do with Himmler, or going through hundreds of pages of junk before finding it. If he wants skull's and bones in his avatar, why wouldnt a first 10 page result be just dandy?

Just my input. My opinion? Change the avatar, and if you want skulls and bones then go through google or bing and find another set of them that does not represent that of an SS elite.

FPx4. Just because he has played with you, does NOT mean he visited your profile. I know for a fact I only check on 1-2 of every 25-30 I play with. I just dont see why I should bother with it. If they were friendly to me, I dont have any problem seeing them again in the future. If you are afraid Betiko has some sort of bias, then take my opinion into consideration when I say there is absolutely no way you found that picture without very delicate searching, which would have required some form of research. I believe you know its meaning.

user control panel
display options
display avatars yes or no

Regardless of the content if an image on the internet offends you you can change the setting so that you do not have to see anyone's avatar

If CC has a problem with it then they will handle it.

Well he could have bought a pin at an auction or yard sale or found it somewhere and photographed it himself to I wouldn't automatically assume that persianempire was looking for Himmler images. We can at least give him the benefit of the doubt as it shouldn't really affect the outcome here.

man this is absolutely nothing personal. I've just looked and we played just 2 games together, last one yesterday and I didn' remember you from before nor had I checked your profile. I have never heard of you from other members of my clan so this has nothing to do with it.
You are probably telling the truth, you don't know that your skull and bones is the one from the SS, but the fact that it is a SS skull and bones is undoubtfull. Is it ok with you to be related to SS? It does make you look like another ignorant nazi wanabee, and anyone with little knowledge of WW2 recognize this as the SS emblem. You are relating yourself to nazis in spite of you and now that you know you don't seem to care.
If no one has ever told you anything in 3 years is not an excuse, so if somene has been flagging a swastika for 3 years and no one noticed it, does it become ok?

side note: this is not just on himler's uniform, although himler was the SS boss. it's all the SS uniforms that had it because it's the symbol of the entire corpse.

are you seriously questioning were skulls and crossed bones SS signature?! in whole Europe, if you mention skulls and bones, noone is thinking pirates or some motor gang or anything of that sort. skulls and crossed bones(totenkopf) represent SS(Schutz-staffel), the most notorious para military structure in history of mankind.
one more thing though, its not Himmler who brought totenkopf to be SS symbol, it was Hitlers personal bodyguard, Julius Schreck who came up with the symbol(previously wear by Frederiks hussars)
this is clearly nazi symbol, anyone with slightest knowledge of history should know that... weather its going to be removed or not its not up to me to question, but i was asked to remove swastika burning in flames, because someone thought its offensive, so i dont see how anyone can question this...

A couple disparate thoughts:

First, always amazed by the different opinions different people hold on what should and should not be allowed. Generally, I would say that there's a divide that runs right down the Atlantic Ocean. The Europeans generally accept and promote rules against certain images and the Americans generally disfavor and argue against these rules. I won't bore you with all the armchair sociology that's running through my head right now.

Second, it will be interesting to see which side of the line this skull-and-bones falls on. It makes logical sense that if the swastika--a symbol of Nazism--is prohibited, the symbol of the "worst" part to the Nazi party should likewise be prohibited. However, it also makes sense that, at least in modern times, the swastika is so visually unique as to be recognized as a symbol of Nazism; whereas, a skull and crossbones could mean many things.

And third, there are plenty of reasons to hate the Nazis, but this topic has given me another one: those guys had the coolest fking uniforms and the coolest fking symbols of any army that I can think of. I mean look at those uniforms with eagles and crosses and swastikas and skull-and-bones! If they would have been the "good guys" then we all would be appropriating their symbols in our avatars. There would be high school football teams called the Jamestown Nazis with big old swastikas on their helmets and eagles on their chests. Just aesthetically, every symbol they used was simply fierce.

I wouldnt say everyone in Europe always thinks of nazis and the SS when you say skull and cross bones, but then different countries suffered in completely different ways. Banning symbols because offence has been taken is a wierd route to go down as do you ban any image that offends or just when it offends 20/50/100 people?

That being said, nazis are clearly an emotive subject and the support of their cause is deplorable is every way. Maybe being made aware of the image's roots should make you personally think about wheather or not you wish to display it so proudly with your name....

I don't understand why, if he is against this, he is not willing to change it immediately. he is basically doing propaganda for something he is against, but won't change it because "he has had the avatar for 3 years". Well mate if you have been wrong for 3 years it's never too late!
Is there anyone doubting that his skull & bones is the one designed by the SS?
he could use many skull & bones styles that are not this one...

so tell me greenoaks, doyou really have problems seeing the difference? it's worse than i thought.
using a nazi symbol as your avatar is making its apology like it or not. wether persian empire knew or not that this specific skull and bone pattern is the one used by the SS is not my problem (you have to be pretty ignorant if you've lived during the WW2 like he did and not knowing that though). I don't see why swastikas wouldn't be allowed if this is allowed. both nazi symbolisms.

Look, persian, do a simple Google Images search. Open up a window with images.google.com, click on your avatar, and drag it to the search bar, like this: https://www.google.com/search?tbs=sbi:A ... 9&biw=1280

All of the results say it's the SS Death's Head. It's the same thing as having a Ku Klux Klansman or a Nazi swastika as an avatar.

you clearly arent European if you think those are "cool" uniforms.
also, you all, again, are missing the difference. i have nothing but uber respect for Wehrmacht. those were exceptional soldiers and war generals, one of best world has ever seen. on other hand, there are Waffen-SS and Schutz-Staffel, both had nothing to do with soldiers. most distinguish SS officers werent even soldiers, but politicians. and those were the people wearing those "cool" uniforms. intimidating? only because we know what they represent.
and you are correct about swastika and totenkopf. swastika represents Nazi party, while totenkopf represents SS division the worst part of whole regime.
