Fog of War View Flip

Postby Seamus76 on Thu Oct 04, 2012 10:32 am

Would it be possible to flip the map view to show where hidden terts are to your opponent/s during a fog game? I know it can be thought out, but I am a visual person and it might be helpful to see how the map (hidden terts) looks from my opponent/s view, and how a potential move might positively or negatively effect the current strategy.

*Edited to hopefully help clarify. I'm not trying to see what my opponent/s have just what is hidden to them, in a more visually distinguished way.

Just kidding haha  .... but if you think about it...... If you can see "what your opponents see" during fog of war, what would be the point of fog of war? You would know where all their troops would be and what bonuses they have!

Lol, that makes sense, but I guess I didn't word it correctly. I'm not trying to see what the other player has, just what is hidden from him. So any "hidden" terts might blink or turn a different color and then back, or even turn to a "?" and then back. Not sure that makes more sense though, or if it even makes sense to me anymore.

The Map Inspect feature of BOB highlights troop numbers in various useful ways. If you hover your mouse cursor over a name in the Players list to the right of the map, all the territories owned by that player are highlighted on the map. Any territory safe from attack appears in a box of the player's colour, while those that can be attacked appear with just a line above and below. (I think there are some variations related to bombardment, but I don't have a game I can check that in easily.) So the boxed territories are invisible to all opponents. If you hover your mouse cursor over a particular territory, BOB highlights its neighbours in a way to illustrate borders and bombardment paths. If no territory belonging to a particular opponent is highlighted, then that opponent cannot see the territory over which you are hovering. Of course, he may have had a peek previously, then lost the viewpoint to another player, so you have to be vigilant, and study the log.

Ahh I understand now. Ender has a great response for you. BOB would work for this, although it may not be perfect.

I don't understand ender's response or how it would work.

I know that BOB allows you to see bordering territories, but how does is show specifically which territories your opponent can see without you having to inspect the map?

What would be great is if you could just have a view that turned your territories they cannot see into question marks or something like that.

But then you couldn't see what you had on your own territories, so you would not want that on all the time. Thus, in some sense, you will have to inspect the map. Have you tried just mucking around with BOB, and studying what it shows you? It can be hard to describe in words what is easy to see on your screen, and I guess I failed with you, sorry. Click on the Help/Info item in the BOB Menu. (I can't tell you how long I used BOB before I read that  It might be a bit out of date, that is, incomplete regarding newer features, but I think what is there is correct.)

I suppose it might be possible to add a special feature to BOB which might do what you want, but right now I have no time to dive into anything like that. Anybody else?

Plus, no matter what, the most information you will get is what your opponent could see if your opponent had every single other territ on the board that you cannot see. I'll use All Your Base as an example (shocking, I know). You will almost never have any territs that have boxes around them in BOB because BOB doesn't know that (at least at the start of the game), your opponent doesn't have the territs that can "see" yours. BOB only knows that there are territs out there of which you don't know the ownership that could see yours if they were held.

This is very true. I hadn't thought of that. We won't really be able to to see everything they can see because of one way attacks.
