Just go to the control panel and on the left side, you'll see all your friends. If they are at the top, and in a bold font, they are online.

I don't think that's true.
I have some people in my friend's list that hide their status and I never see them online, even when I know for a fact that they are online.

Basically, I'm in favor with one change. You must each be friends with each other. So, you can't have someone just add you as a friend and them be able to see you. It must be mutual.

Would enable those who want to let their clan-mates/friends know when they are online but won't be visible to spammers, etc.
Pretty straightforward really. My clan-mates and I were discussing why some hide their online status but we all realized that we would never mind if clan-mates knew we were on, for obvious reasons. For the record I don't ever hide my online status but am speaking for my clan as a whole. If this has been suggested before, please direct me.

This does sound familiar ...

no, in fact you should not be able to hide your online status at all. Hiding is weak. Considering we do not want to get trolled by our employer/spose/ whatever i can see that the site feels they are required to allow the option, but to allow friends to see you (as the next op is going to should) is basicly weak.
hiding your online status will only be used for some 'competetive ' edge, particular with freestyle and or speed games. Again, this should be counted as abuse of the gamesystem.
But if the option to hide should stay, then do not ever allow it to be shared with "friends".
It is either hide from all, or not at all.

An example of an instance where you would have your online status publicly hidden would be during a game you needed to know whether or not your partner was online and whether or not you could contact him/her or not. He/she may not mind his partner contacting him but would rather not be bothered by anyone else. This instance has nothing to do with tactics.
