Only the red baron's plane was red. Other german planes were kinda brownish if I recall correctly.

Actually looking it up, it appears that they may have been multicolored. Reading about it, it looks like they used multiple polygon-shaped colors for a form of camouflage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fokker_D_VII.jpg

I doubt that actually drawing polygons like these with various colors and then scaling it down to the appropriate size for these aircraft is very feasible. Maybe averaging out the colors to come up with something?

Edit: I think averaging them out would give a sort of brownish-green color.
Of course, the red could be used simply because it has come to be associated somewhat with german world war 1 aircraft, simply because of the red baron. It would help keep them distinguishable.

hmm where did my first comment to nattys post go :-k well it was some thing like what you found on wiki, german plains came in all colors and some in camo, brown/green/blue.

Now, natty is rigth about it was only the red baronĀ“s plain was red, and it was also the most beautiful ww1 airplaine, then its obvious to use it, also as you say its associated with ww1.

I will tone up the red color so it dosent looks so much "hello kitty"

About the colour of the planes. The planes could be any colour at all. They were painted individually and there was no uniform idea.
The squadron that was known as "The flying circus" (not just the Red Baron, though he is the most famous) used to paint their planes with bright garish colours.

The text is unclear on the small version. Title + region labels are fine, everything else not.

Under the 1917. All the text in the small looks unclear. Your glow/shadow is strong so toning that down might help. Try to increase the font size by one if that does not work (which means you will need to shuffle it about to make it all fit).

I think you can increase the opacity of the drop shadow under your storyline a bit as it is making it hard to read it.

Hmm yes, the drop shadow can be reduced NP.

The poem is a small context and is writen by a soldier under ww1, I love the text, it got some thing horrible beauty over it, and match the theme perfect.

I do prefer the poem in red, but an alternative in white ?

Swap the colours around to match the title. Black letters with the white drop.

It dident work, the white was to dominating, I have come to the conclusion that red fits the bedst, also to enhance the contents of the poem.

I have made the red colour darker (like blood  )so it dont flicker in to your eyes.

Question, why does the Allied aircraft get a tarmac, when the Germans don't? In this era landing strips were all pretty much open fields, not paved.

Very nice, thank you, perhaps a lil flavor for the airstrips as well? Buildings and people wouldn't likely work because of established scale on the dead bodies... perhaps a couple oil drums or a period AA gun could though.

Image

Could be an interesting gp addition with an AA gun for each side, but that wrinkle I leave at your discretion.

As it is now is a little cartoon-like, and it all does not match 100% of scale, I think it does not mean so much because it's just to give a visual impression of trench warfare.
I'm not so crazy to put some more things on the theme as it should not dominate the whole picture.

I do not think that we need a weapon that can shoot down aircraft, although they did have that during WW1. The aircrafts can attack each other, but I'll play around with the idea.

While I think white was easier to red - the new read doesn't hurt the eyes and I think it's fine :)
