It is reset every round, mainly because the groups are reset every round - but also to give everyone a chance to keep advancing.

I've thought about carrying over scores, but with the groups being decided randomly it isn't very fair.

Please don't interpret this as a complaint, but I honestly don't see the reasoning. I think cumulative scores are more, not less, fair, because they average out your performance in a wider variety of situations (different opponents, different maps, etc.) With non-cumulative scores, you can do an amazing job for a long time, but one sudden burst of bad luck and you're dead.
