Map Idea: New Zealand

Postby coldturkey on Mon Feb 14, 2011 3:59 pm

Map Name: New Zealand
Link to Thread: viewtopic.php?f=583&t=138056
Mapmaker(s): coldturkey, someone good at gfx?
Map Size: 26
Your aims/design style: Give people an idea of the country
Uniqueness: Clean and Green New Zealand!!!!!!!
Relevant Experience: I play risk

OK, so here is my idea.. But I need someone to help do the graphics because I am really bad at them ;)

Main features: Airports (Main cities) can attack eachother, other passages are the ferry and boat.

There are +3 and +2 bonuses for holding the complete islands.

Or maybe just one more link - the airports heldp get around the map - maybe something to link the far south - a boat to the north or something? Or maybe two killer-neutral navy regions offshore, east and west? Navy ships link to all shores on their side (east or west), and each other?

I think you need more territories.

There are enough regions guys, small maps are allowed - the main thing is being able to get around them and setting the bonuses right.

i would help if i were any good at graphics but im not, though if you would like an assistant for various random tasks and advice and overall new zealand information (having lived here all my life) then i could help ;) for example if you added more territories to the south island then maybe you could have a break in the southern alps to represent arthurs pass. the tranzalpine goes through there, it is quite a nice train ride

Dunedin doesn't have a significant international airport :P
Plus i've never been there.

I like the idea of offshore boats. Maybe use the New Zealand Frigates? There are two:

The HMNZS Te Kaha and HMNZS Te Mana

Anyone want to take charge with the gfx and get most of the credit? I can help with bits and pieces

There are 26 regions, is that not enough?

You could split up some of the South Island ones, but the reality is there is nothing much there :P

 since this is a map based on geography not population you do realise that south island is quite a bit bigger than the north and has better impassables too, for example in addition to the southern alps there are so many rivers to enhance the gameplay plus you can have haast pass and arthurs pass and stuff to access the west coast most of which is blocked by the alps to reflect the fact that the west coast is very secluded

If you're serious about making this map - which I'm all in favour of - then I would encourage you to read through the best previous attempt at making a map of New Zealand (viewtopic.php?f=242&t=60675), and trying to get your head around the gameplay concerns that were raised, and will likely become an issue again.

Graphically, your image works as a basic sketch, but I can see a lot of work ahead of you to bring this up to the current foundry standard. That said, my first draft of the map that became Europa was similar to the one you have presented, so there's no reason that this should deter you from making a start ;-)

I can help with the graphics if you would like. But I'm moving this week end and will need some time to get settled. Maybe start in a couple weeks.

That would be good.
I didnt actually realise this had been attempted a couple times before, the latest one is almost there but the developer gave up on.

To start I need a good high resolution outline with nice soft edges I think. Its interesting to see that people had the same idea as me about using ferries and airports etc.

I like my idea of separating the country into "common themes" such as beaches, wine and food etc etc. Gives it more of a touristy feel and gives a better idea about the country.

It would appear that development of this map has stalled. If the mapmaker wants to continue with the map, then one of the Foundry Moderators will be able to help put the thread back into the Foundry system, after an update has been made. ;-)

I hope this map can be continued. As to the neutrals idea, what about Northland for drought, Hawkes Bay for floods and Christchurch for earthquakes?

there's this more than half decent territorial authority map if you want more than 26 territories.
I'd be disappointed if Te Anau and Fiordland weren't incorporated into Southland, as well Westland could be broken up a bit with some Alps. Mt Cook needs to go in also, and perhaps the glacial district. :)

Of all the New Zealand ideas, yours seems the best cairswick. But is this actively being pursued?
