sorry to quote myself, but you guys seem to have missed my hint:
Serbia and got tonkaed were in the right era with their guesses...

and that Era was the 1960's, so no to Olajuwan, Walton, Abdul-Jabbar and Magic. Keep trying!
Here's a few more hints--he is of course in the Hall of Fame, is considered one of the best all-around players ever, and was president of the NBA Players' Assosciation when they sued the league for modern free agency and won.
I'm pretty sure at least a few of you guys will kick yourselves for not knowing this one!

I'm not sure, but I'm going to guess Jerry 'The Logo' West.

not the Logo either. here are some more hints: He was a key member of the 1960 gold medal Olympic team in Rome (where he co-captained the team with Jerry West), his college team made two final four appearances, but failed to win the national championship, and the college basketball version of the Heisman Trophy is named after him...man I'm just giving it away now :P

Does his last name sound something like Marovich or Marinovich or something like that?

I couldn't help it, I had to look it up.

Dammit. That was kinda easy. But for some reason I can never remember that the guy existed, for the most part.... good one, perch.

8) Told you I'd get even here Inca :P
Another hint, because this guy was amazing and there are so many cool facts about him: He was NBA MVP in 1964, and it was the only time someone other than Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain won the award between 1960-1968.

Touche, bro. Just wait till it's my turn, I'll start asking questions about the America's Cup. Guaranteed to get the thread off the first page in near-record time.

Yeah, America's Cup trivia would clear the room like a wet fart :(
It actually saddens me that such an important player is so relatively forgotten by today's fans--Inca you're not the only one who can't remember this guy existed. Anyway one more hint before I log off, I hope someone's taken the mantle by the time I'm back (Inca's authorized to declare the winner :P ) He was on of the five inaugural members of the College Basketball Hall of Fame, along with John Wooden, Bill Russell, Dean Smith and Dr. James Naismith.

lol, that's just great. New Zealand wins the America's Cup in '95, defends it in 99, giving NZ our only great claim to any success in the greatest sailing event in the world...

and nobody wants to discuss it

Yeah, and then Counts and like eight hundred Kiwis go and sign on with Alinghi and take the Cup back to freakin' Switzerland. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the next go-around this coming summer?

Whatever. Dennis Conner licks elephant anus.

I think you're right there, something is going on this year with the Cup.
I gave up following it after Peter Blake got killed in South America and every other bastard and his dog defected to bigger money in bigger countries :(

It was never the same after that asinine catamaran vs. big boat thing. That prompted the move to the pseudo-one-design AC boats, which were so much more expensive to design and build than 12-meters that the teams gladly accepted that much more sponsorship and ESPN money... and once you add gobs of money to a sport, it all goes downhill.

Too bad that during a given summer olympics they show about ten minutes of sailing. That would be way more fun to watch than the Cup.

Amen to that. At least our not-so-big-headed Kiwi sailors still hold their own in the Olympics from time to time.

I think one of the biggest jokes of the Cup was that whole catamaran affair
And another big one was when he took the Kiwis to court for having a fibreglass hull while he still had the old aluminium one

Damn, Conner was the man we all loved to hate, too... those were the days
