New York Map Challenge - the Real Deal

Postby RjBeals on Mon Sep 27, 2010 7:44 pm

Benn/Staff - I hope you let me post this...

We all have a common interest here in this forum - mapping. I don't know what it is about maps, perhaps the mix of technical and artistic styles mixed together - but It's certainly a huge interest of mine. I imagine a good bit of you share my passion.

So cut to the point - cartographersguild.com/ has teamed up with the SoHo Digital Art Gallery in New York for a mapping competition. The competition is basically to map New York, however you wish! Be Creative. The Top 45 maps will be chosen by the community, and on display in the digital art gallery. Prints will be offered for sale as well, with a portion going back to the artist.

It's a way to really push your skills to the next level. I hope some of you do this - deadline is Oct-31

Thread can be found HERE

Sorry for the blatant solicitation, but I think many members will actually appreciate this.

my entry is going to be a tribute to the roots of hip hop. I'm going to showcase top ny areas that influenced the genre. Currently there's only about 30 entries, so we're all guaranteed a spot in the gallery. I'm visiting family over Thanksgiving, so I'll personally visit the gallery to see the maps!

Sure thing, Scatman :P

I actually wish that this forum were used more to discuss stuff like this... I'm also tempted to have a bash at something, but not sure I'll have the time to get anything decent put together...

I'm working hard on it but my time is so limited! I wanted to do two of them but I seriously doubt I will have time for the second. I'll post a work in progress pic when I get the chance.

It's taken tons and tons of time to just do 1 map. Finding those locations took about a solid week. Many of those places are long gone, torn down and rebuilt or parking lots now. I got in touch with some old schoolers to help.

But post something up Helix - I'm anxious to see what you got.

And Pork said he was mapping something also?

I'm interested to see if anybody else came up with anything. I was very tempted to have a go myself, but just haven't had enough time :-(

Don't think anyone from the foundry entered - or at least that I saw. But there are some great ones there. I've still not submitted mine yet. It keeps changing !

I've been working on it for a month now but just tonight I decided that i lacked a clarity of vision to make the idea work. So, with three days left until the deadline I've started over.

I have no idea if I'm going to finish on time... I have work all day tomorrow and half a day Saturday to devote to it and all of Sunday... never mind... two days to do it in as posts must be made before Oct. 31. Long night I think.

Finished. Not a map for the average joe, this map. I think most people won't get it. The real map is actually double this size. I've reduced by 2 for the web view.

Sweet map RJ. I cannot overestimate enough how pleasing it is to look at ;-)

----
Couple of typos in the text on the right - "and the important ROLE they played"... should "DJing" be "DJ'ing"? Also, it looks like you could do with adding a(nother) space between TWO/TURN in the titley text on the left.

On the map itself, I'm querying the spelling of the following locations, but don't know if they're deliberately misspelt in RL:
Ecastasy Garage - should this be Ecstasy Garage?
Bronx-skatin Rink - should there be a G on Skating?
----

You know you've missed feedback like this :P

Exactly what i hoped for Benn. I know "skatin" is spelled that way - but I think Ecstasy is wrong for sure. And I'll have at those other areas also.

I don't get feedback like this at cartographersguild

Ugh... I'm at the point where I can throw some labels on this guy and scan it in or there is no way I'm going to finish before work today.

Cool beans. Let me know how it goes. The art teacher at my school is visiting New York tomorrow for a Broadway play Saturday night. Who knows? Maybe she'll check out the exhibit? :)
