Colourful Map

Postby FixitDave on Sat Aug 07, 2010 8:05 am

I had an idea for a very simple map that most people, and I would think all CC players, could understand and start to play.

With my limited graphic skills I came up with this...

As there are no borders that split off continents as with most other maps, this would hopefully provide a good game.

29 regions
12 Continents
I have thought about Horizontal & Vertical bonus along the pipes to give more continents but I think it could take away the simplicity of the map.

Simple borders with pipes added to bring in the regions that have limited borders
Solid colour can attack it's overlapped colours
Overlapped colours can attack solid colours up/down/left/right and along the pipe

Abstract maps are very hard to get through the foundry though, unless you can come up with some kind of theme to support the concept.

See for example the Hive, which transformed from a simple hex grid to a bee hive...

The circles of colours are not enough of a theme?

Would you suggest any changes/additions?

I can't think of anything at the moment, but some kind of theme would benefit the map and guarantee an easier ride through the foundry.

"Colours" is a bit vague and abstract... players usually seem to want something "real" to fight over... like, why are we fighting over blobs of colour? That's the question you should strive to answer within your map.

How about a color wheel? Similar to 8 thoughts, a great map, but with some twists on gameplay. I play 8 Thoughts and have fun, I think something like a larger version, such as a color wheel, would be cool.

It would just be a larger version of 8 thoughts? :-k

A colour wheel would solve the theme issue somewhat. You could still have the double dipping bonuses - R,G,B,C,M,Y would make 6 bonus areas, and the shades between them would be the overlapping territories. saturation decreases to the middle, and white in the center can one-way all primary colours (RGB). Sounds fun.

Ok so 6 colours (primary + secondary) + 12 shades between them (for example, from R to Y you would have Red, Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow) would give 18 territories on the outer rim.

The middle ring could have the desaturated colours, so there's fewer - maybe 12? They could also overlap with each other.

Then white in the middle, and we'd have 18+12+1 = 31 territories. It could work!

I like the original concept I think better than the color wheel idea as long as more bonuses could be included, such as the pipes, maybe? Either way, I think it'd be an awesome map as long as its simplicity is maintained throughout the foundry process.

I didn't quite understand the "wheel" suggestions so I made changes to show a type of wheel, this creates more continents and regions, but still keeps the original concept of simplicity...

3 neutral on regions around the white circle, random placements of rest...any comments?

Your colours are in the wrong order. It should be:

Red - Yellow - Green - Cyan - Blue - Magenta

I agree w/ natty. But do you think you could re-include the pipes? I really liked that. Maybe you can tie in a bonus or attack route with it? Also, I love the win condition. Makes things much more interesting.

How does this look?

I've added some pipes in and also names on the outside circle...

Better. Still could use some improvements like "purple" should be "magenta", maybe have pipes going down the middle of each color from the outermost middle to the innermost (if you know what I mean. Another idea for the pipes btw, maybe have them be one way attack routes?? Idk I want to hear your thoughts about them), and the names of the individual territories (as well as the innermost coloured circles) are absent. Love the "Star of David" effect in the middle, I assume they're attack routes? Plus, I think "Coloured Set" should include the individual coloured circles in its bonus (and maybe have the bonus a teensy bit more since it'd be difficult to get), so like Coloured Circle: +2, Coloured Set: +9 or whatever. Also, you need to have clear attack routes between territories (kinda forgot that before). Anyways, I don't mean to tear apart your design or be super critical, because I LOVE this map, I'm just trying to think of edits.

This map's biggest fan,
Sully :D

Thanks for you input, I'll think about the one way attacks.

The namings will be "Red1" for center region of red1 and "Red1-Magenta2" for the region between red1 and magenta2, LightRed-Red1, LightRed-LightYellow, etc etc.

The coloured set bonus is on top of the circle bonus so if you own a full set of red circles you will get +6 for 3 circles +2 fo the set to give +8...you think it should be +3 for each bonus to give 12 for full set?

The center star was/is going to have coloured triangles to match the colour of the circles it connects with...maybe could bombard from these regions to regions of that colour...Maybe just the center of #1 & #2?...or will this start to remove simplicity theme, which is why I started this?

1. The Namings - Okay I understand now thanks :D

2. The Coloured Bonuses - I think +2 or +3 would be fine for the full colour set, I was just thinking of more incentive to get all 3 circles of one colour rather than 3 circles of different colors. Also, the pale-coloured circles have more territories than the outer circles (just noticed that actually). Should they be worth more since they have more territories or the same since they're so close to the middle?

3. The Center Star - I like your idea with it one-way attacking the outer territories, and if you made the pipes a one way attack toward the center, this could give some great balance and would have a neat effect on the gameplay while still maintaining simplicity.

Can't wait to see the next updated map and I am grateful for your considering my ideas and I hope my input helps. This is definitely my favorite map EVER. Keep at it!!

As always, your #1 Colourful Map fan,
Sully :D

P.S. Think of a good name for your map btw. Idk if "Colourful Map" is the best name/description for this map (no offense). I'll let you know if I think of any possible names :D

I like it. I was thinking the one-way attacks from the center would be to the Red1-Red2, Yellow1-Yellow2, etc. territories, just so then you'd have an even number of one-ways toward the center and one-ways toward the outer layer, but I like what you've done nonetheless and I support your decision either way. I wonder if there's a way to make the map look less busy, because the dozens of arrows just make things appear confusing (maybe the pipes can help? Or maybe I just have some weird obsession with pipes...) Anyways, hope my input helps.

¡Sully! :D

you're beginning to lose the simplicity of the map, which is what makes this such a good idea. I think you should get rid of the inside to outside 1 way attacks (the ones where the arrows are curved)

I was thinking the same thing, I'll keep the inward one way attacks to help with the objective of capturing the central White circle.

What's everybodys thoughts on the single small White circle as the goal or the large coloured White circle with 7 regions as the goal?

The large one. It seems like capturing and holding 1 territory as a win condition has been done before. You could even just get rid of the centermost territory and just have the six. Just a thought.
