Suggestion: Divide abandoned maps from vacationed maps

Postby ender516 on Mon Apr 05, 2010 9:52 pm

I just read a topic about a new Chess map where one responder was under the impression that john9blue's map had been abandoned. Given that the thread now resides in the Recycling Bin, that is an easy mistake to make. Why not keep the Recycling Bin strictly for those topics where the mapmaker has not responded to a fortnightly warning about inactivity, and have another forum for those topics which are moved to the sidelines temporarily at the request of the mapmaker. Call it the Holding Pen.

Seconded. Also, not on this topic directly, but can't the Melting Pot be cleared out and separated into "active" threads (have had posts within a year) and "non-active" threads?

Not sure if creating even more subforums is such a great idea.

If a map is on vacation, then the development is on hold. There's no reason for casual observers to comment on a map that isn't currently being worked on.

Then again if a map is abandoned, someone may still resurrect it one day. So I don't see a huge reason for dividing these apart...

Yes, that is a good idea, too, but seemed more complicated. Things only move into the Recycling Bin by request of the mapmaker (for vacation, or much more rarely, when the mapmaker says "Enough!") or by a Foundry moderator declaring a map abandoned. I have only seen the latter done to maps in the Workshops or the Forge, presumably to keep these at a manageable size. So having the mods move things to two different places seemed to be no more work.

If a map is on vacation because the mapmaker has exams and will be back in a month, there is no reason a brilliant comment could not be added and dealt with when the time comes. Maps on vacation we would expect to return to activity, and should not be looked at as something to be grabbed and built upon. Abandoned maps we would not expect to return to activity, and they would be fair game for recycling.

This could be done by using stickies/announcements---then you could keep everything in the same general area (the single forum), but have a clear dividing line.

Fastposted by Andy. I just thought the same thing and then I saw Andy's post...

I'd say this would be the best solution: all vacationed/abandoned maps still go to the bin, but abandoned maps would be normal, and those only on vacation would be stickied...

Maps awaiting XML updates would not be stickied, until it seems that the update they're waiting for is close by.

Well, I think that the proof of whether a map is on vacation or abandoned relies on whether or not the mapmaker actually revives the thread.

Does that mean that this would be a good place for my question of "Where the hell did the Pearl Harbor map go?"

glide....there are two active games left in the latter version of Pearl Harbor. The map has temporarily been withdrawn by lackattack to stop player creating new games so these last few games can be finished.
When they are finished, the original version of P.H. will be re-instated as a playable map.
Hope that helps. :)
