Re: Nordic Countries <v.58> p1,49 [Gp,G] - one last decision p50

I think it would be too crowded with that font. This one is legible even though it is small, so I think I'm going to keep it like this if there are no further objections.

edit. ah, page changed. Here's the newest version again for this page.

Sorry, font doesn't work. It's the combo of condensed + stroke that makes the letters run into each other and makes it hard to read.

Ok ok. I'll see what I can do.

The texture looks fine now though, right?

That new font in the mini-map is much more legible.

The text kerning still needs to be adjusted all over the map. There is no need for the letters to be so crammed up.

Sorry but I will not be doing this. Paint.net does not have adjustable kerning so it would be a huge hassle doing all of that manually. The text is legible and clear, which is enough for me, and the compact text makes the map features clear. Also some places that are kinda crowded would be worse if the text was made wider.

Either way, I have now brought the small version up to date.

Also first post updated.

XML still the same: http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/2/7/2 ... _xml_7.xml

I have a strong feeling this is the version I'll be going to beta with.

Like I said: there are lots of places where widening the font just is not feasible. I like to keep it compact. See Denmark area especially on small map... And doing it on just some places but not others would be weird, I want to keep the font consistent.

I don't think anyone would even notice there's anything wrong with the kerning (I know I didn't before you started talking about it).

I think the font is fine. I appreciate the gesture, but I'm sure I could be doing nitpicks here for all eternity, if given the chance... there comes a time to draw the line and say "it is done". All the major concerns have been addressed, so I'd say the map is ready for beta-testing right now.

It is your map, and you can do as you wish, but if you look closer, you would see that the kerning is NOT uniform at all. Check out Rogaland for example. Do you see all of that daylight between the o and g, while the rest of the text is jammed tight together. The text has these same issues all over the place. In some places the l's are overlapped on other letters, like on Hasingland.

I realize that you are anxious to get this thing quenched, but this is the time for nitpicks. ;)

Porkenbeans, I appreciate all your effort, but nobody else has even noticed this. I don't think it's an issue. The text seems fine to me.

I'll fix the gaps between the o:s and g:s, but that will be all I'll do to the text. After that I think it will be done.

The text looks fine.

The minimap is much more legible without the italics (although I'd probably prefer you to have used the same font you've used elsewhere).

It probably could have ended up going either way with the texture on the minimap, but I stand by by belief that your amendment is an overall improvement and helps the minimap and the main map sit together more comfortably.

It's time for another one of these...

They do look perfect.

I should mention, though, that I think you should consider enlarging the troop circles on the small map to give a full background to the numbers.

I would, but I'm a bit short on space at some places in the small map, like Denmark. And Oslo, Helsinki, Gothland... Enlargening the circles there would make it too crowded.

The small one looks excellent =D> BETA!!!

In this case, no... it would look really weird if the army circles were different sizes, you know?

I think the army circles are fine. They're a tight fit, but the numbers do fit in them. The purpose of army circles is to make the numbers legible, and here they serve that purpose, so I'm going to keep them as they are.

As for the coordinates, I think I found two that need fixing: on the small version, vesturland 1 px right, Bornholm 1 px down. Åland maybe 1 px down? The large version seems good all around.

So I'll fix these, and then I'd really like to see the map stamped for XML and moving towards beta...

Ok I was wrong about bornholm & åland, they were correct after all. But Vesturland was corrected, also Hälsingland, Uusimaa, Nordjylland and Midtjylland were each moved 1px right left on the small map.

Here is the updated XML, will post test results for small version shortly.
