Quake! ver. 1.01

Postby elGrande on Tue Feb 23, 2010 2:19 pm

UPDATE: Will be working on the map all weekend! Lots to do with it! Graphically, I will stick with the basic colors that I have, but make some tweeks to font and such. Borders will be redefined as well.

I am still adding a few things and will go over a lot of the strategy myself before I submit, but I was hoping for any insight as this is my first map attempt. If all goes well and I am able to find someone to code the xml... I plan on making a few maps. I am loving this site and game!

Quad will only secure 4 bonuses for being held (hence 'quad').. but will be able to attack from each of its region's waterways to the arrows.

Mega - representing extra health
Red Armor - representing extra armor
Yellow Armor - extra armor
Armor Shards - extra armor

Each of these will bring spoils when owned individually and even more spoils when owned in combinations.
Most likely each of these will start as neutral regions.

UPDATED: Tweaked graphical aspects, Added 'Portals' For additional movement through map, and updated Legend.

re-adding this map to the foundry..but first updating old post with updated links to map!! Here comes the QUAKE!!

UPDATED: Starting Regions

RA/YA/MEGA/SHARDS/Quad Territory all start with 3 Neutral troops each.

60 remaining regions

Each player will start with a maximum of 11 regions and divided equally if more then 5 players.

Now THIS is how a first draft should look like. Excellent work! =D>

First, you'll need to submit a design brief for your map. Check out the design brief thread, on this forum.

Now... sadly, Quake is copyrighted, and we can't have copyright infringements. This is why the classic map was revamped, and why the middle earth map is now Midgard. You'll need to rename the map, and remove all references to the Quake games. Ie. all names like "Strogg" need to be changed.

Another option is to try to get permission from the copyright holder, but I have a feeling the chances of that happening are slim.

Looks good for your first draft. A couple of things, put your map in [BigImg][/BigImg] tags like this.

Also can you put the title and version of your map in the subject. What is that thing between Walkway and mega?

Other than that keep up the good work! =D> =D>

Yea what natty said as well!

Well lucky for me, I am personally friends with the developers of the Quake series! I will contact them. I have used a lot of their wording before in my websites and other logos. I will contact them tonight. I am sure that they will allow me to use their logos and names...but will double check. I did try to avoid a direct relation in most cases. The names of maps and bots should not be an issue at all. I would be more concerned with the use of the Quake III logo.
Thank you for the kind words and the insight on copyright stuff.

I will do all of those things you mentioned! Thank you for the input.

The 'thing' between the Walkway and to get to the Mega.. is a stone wall.. or some sort of wall that will not allow you to directly attack from one area to another. There are areas that have a lot of regions and I think that some of it needs a 'stop flow' or attaching points. Meaning.. there needs to be a break in the ability for a player to run 'ramshot' through an area.

Wow, that makes you almost a celebrity then. :D

Well, if you can get a permission from them, then all is well. But I suggest you get this sorted before proceeding too far with the map. It would be a shame to do lots of work for naught.

Thank you all for the kind words!

I am also thinking of working on an Area 51 map or some sort of Alien Planet map. Also.. has anyone here played Stronghold Crusader? I would like to take some of the things from there and use them in a map (obviously without infringing on copyrights :P )

Anyone with some ideas for a good map and I will consider working on it.

Definitely one of the better first maps I've seen. It looks like you've got a skill that often most new cartographers lack, so congrats on that!

As mentioned, sort out copyright first and early, as that will be your main hurdle to overcome in this initial stage.

And some general advice, read over the Announcements in this forum if you haven't already: viewforum.php?f=466

Some of them have information on the process and what to expect, and they may help you in the initial stages.

Best advice? Be patient, respectful, respond to poor suggestions as well as bad, explain your ideas and vision, be open to critique, update often and try not to let your map stagnate too much, and did I mention be patient? That above all may be one of the best tools in cartographer's arsenal.

Best of luck,

Thank you all!
Thanks Andy.. I will be sure to check out the other forum immediately!

I have already sent an email to the guys at id software with a jpeg of the map. I should hear back tomorrow. Regardless... I will finish the map, but if needed, I will change the names and such.

I have already printed a version out and will go over the 'statistics' of the map to make sure I have a pretty balanced map for strategy. Shoot.. I have friends that will print it out and put it on a board for me.. I may even just start BETA testing it in real life with the 6 other people that all signed up on this site with me! We are addicted!

Thank you all!

Hopefully this develops, when the Ā© stuff is done and over, I would try and work on making sure that borders / one way attacks are clearly outlined for players. Make sure you don't have any 4-way crosses, thats a big one. Other than that I LOVE the gameplay already! Being able to attack respective arrows from any region the waterway borders would bring up intriguing strategy. Kudos! Be sure to see this one to the end, my friend!

Couple of things on foundry "protocol":

Change your thread title. (in case you don't know, this is done by editing the first post) The thread title should have the name of the map, latest version number, and the page number where the last update is posted. Check out some other threads in gp workshop and gfx workshop, to see how thread titles are named.

The first post of the thread should always contain the latest version of the map, and all the relevant information: number of territories, all gameplay features (neutrals, starting points, bonus areas etc.)

Let me know if there is more that I need to be aware of. I am going through the proper forum posts now to catch up and make sure I am in line here! :P

Thanks guys!

Later I will post the idea for the 'Golf' map that I am working on for another site user!

This is a very good first draft image - and I really like that way you're approaching the project so far.

As others have said, the copyright will be the first hurdle; if you can cross that bridge, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to put together a design brief.

All the best ;-)

Received an email back from Id software today! I am a go! Everything I currently have on the map is acceptable as long as I do not plan to make money off of the map.

So.. we are a go! I will hopefully finish up all of the region names and such tonight!

But will they be ok with lackattack making money off it? After all, CC is a business.. And the maps contribute to people wanting to buy premium... so, I'm just saying you should make sure they (id) understand this and are ok with it.

Your name being John Clark is freaking me out, I have a professor (okay he is not a doctor but a college teacher anyway) with that name and if you are him I'll have to commit suicide, not that I have anything against Clark even though I've failed his class 4 or so times.

Copyright aside, even if this map had no theme the gameplay is definitely something I would like. If you can't get passed the copyright hurdle I wouldn't mind giving you a set of completely different names and coming up with an alternate title for you.

That font is bad though. Seriously. Very hard to read; it is going to need to change before you are done so might as well change it early before it becomes too difficult to do it quickly.
Warning: You may be reading a really old topic.

I agree with the font now that I have posted it as a jpeg. One thing though.. I have yet to turn the font into objects and most times it looks much clearer when done so. I may have to try that first.

The copyright issue has been taken care of. I received an email almost immediately back from id software saying that I could use what I had.

Thanks,

I agree with natty here. Make sure that ID Software knows where the map is going to go. Maybe give them the sites address so they can see for themselves (just an idea).

Right, since only a very small number of our maps involve copyright, I suggest you contact MrBenn to make sure everything is order, and that he has a legitimate copy of expressed permission to use names, icons, etc. The terms of the permission most likely will be important and these should probably be discussed with MrBenn, once again.

The email that I received from id software says that I am OK with everything I have so far. Technically, the only issue that they might have had would have been the faint Quake III logo in the background in upper right. Most of the names on the regions are generic names or not associated with id software. Ill send a confirmation to my contacts at id today. I did completely mention where it was going and also told my friend to join up and play! He looked at the site and said it looked great..but he is currently working on the new engine for id and does not have much time for this... :( I was hoping to beat him at something.. :)
