CC Map Censorship questions...

Postby Industrial Helix on Thu Jan 21, 2010 8:17 pm

I don't mean to ruffle any feathers but I have some kind of legit questions about it as I've been entertaining some thoughts of a Chinese Civil War or Russian Civil War/Revolution map. Just a few quick answers will do and then I expect it will be locked to avoid major griping or what have you.

1) The swastika is obviously banned... are there any other symbols that are banned as well? Can I use the Stars and Bars or Hammer and Sickle?

2) Can portraits of certain leaders be used on maps? I'd imagine Hitler is out, but does the same apply to Stalin or Mao?

3) This is just a speculative question, but if someone made a map of something like Tibet would Chinese players be blocked from this site? I find it kind of interesting our only China map is "Greater" China.

Interesting questions but I have no idea. I do not think CC is deliberately censoring it's content for chinese people though...

I have no idea how they would, maybe just take the "Greater" out of the China map?

I did this little proxy thing once with my computer where my internet was running though Chinese and Hong Kong controlled computers... it was kind of interesting but I could get Conquer Club pretty easy... albeit slow.

It's called Greater China because it includes Taiwan (disputed) and Hong Kong (not disputed).

The Hammer and Sickle, to my knowledge, are banned in certain countries, but I don't know quite how harshly. The symbol is currently used in a few maps on CC (as is the Swastika so make of that what you will).

The Stars and Bars,* on the other hand, are not only legal but exceedingly common. Many Americans take pride in it as a symbol of "Southern heritage", and in fact the design is integrated into at least one official state flag.

*Technically, the term "Stars and Bars" refers to an earlier Confederacy flag with an entirely different configuration. The more you know!

There are several state flags that kinda sorta use Confederate flags, or flags that resemble various "offical" flags of the CSA. The Dixie, or Southern Cross flag was used in different form (a square flag) as a battlefield standard for units in the field of the Confederate army. The common flag now used is the same flag, but stretched onto a 4-by-3 field using the design of the Confederate Naval Ensign, but with the colors of the Army's battle standard.

I dunno, if the flags or persons you'd want to put on a map were used correctly in the historical sense then you should be okay... but be aware that if the community sees it as a problem, it will likely have to be removed.

These images are floating around on various maps, Lenin, swastikas, the Southern Cross, Hammer & Sickle, etc. but all these are used a historically accurate way, and are usually subtle.

I agree with your view on this subject. Showing the German flag of 1940 on a map depicting WWII, is perfectly proper. BUT, and here is a real big BUT, I have seen this very thing come up on one of the WWII maps. I forgot which one it was, but the German flag was not allowed by CC. Personally I think it was a case of PC going amok. How silly and utterly moronic, but hey, what can ya do ?

If the images you want to use fit the map - then they should be fine...

But if they don't they won't be allowed.

The Swastika is actually a Hindu symbol too.

The swastika was also a symbol of the Boy Scouts prior to being adopted by the Nazis. For centuries the swastika was a symbol of hope and good luck, before being perverted. That's the funny thing about banning symbols or words - it's the meaning/purpose that matters, not the symbol itself.

Well, as far as the Swastika was concerned, I'd noticed it'd been taken off of the latest version of Das Schloss. I was just wondering if Conquer Club had any specific rules in regards to the controversial symbols, ect.

As for the Stars and Bars... yeah, I'm aware of it role in Southern pride, ect. I was just curious if it had any restrictions at Conquer Club. Interestingly enough, did you know that the stars and bars actually refers to a different flag? The one everyone is familiar with, the X pattern on red, was actually the battle flag of the Confederacy and not the flag of the Confederacy.

You could say something similar about the St Georges cross (aka the english flag) - at the moment it can be seen as a racist symbol...

For instance a pub that flies that flag can be viewed as a "non asian" pub... can also be classified as non gay too...

Frankly I find this all ridiculous...
