Some numbers still look off to me, but I've played with them for hours moving them 1 pixel at a time with my brother Grant (He insists I mention his name...) for an extra set of eyes, and they've come as close as we can get them.

Apologies for my earlier outburst at those who have picked up this map to push it over the hill - this map has been lurching like something from a 60s horror movie!

I commend you for the hard work and effort you've put into helping out =D>

One minor point - the order of regions on the legend would make more sense if it were as follows:

Great North
Labrador
Newfoundland
Sud de Quebec
Duplessis
Est de Quebec
New brunswick
Nova Scotia.

Some of the region colours are very similar; it's difficult to make them out from the legend, especially if you don;t know the areas... Is there any way of differentiating the orangey/browns a little more (they're the only "problem" territories)

The circles float over the land in the layered file so it shouldn't be a problem =) I didn't get a chance last evening but I only work 1/2 day today so all afternoon is free for me to poke around with the map.

OK..

I changed the order in the legend and changed Nova Scotia's color. I also tweaked the colors and brightness of each make area to try and make them a little more distinct.

How does this work for you all?

A bit too bright for me personally, what I liked about the old color scheme was that it was laid back on the eyes.

Thanks for the help with the map, but to be frank ... The new colors are too bright and looks like a clown picked them. This area in Canada is more of a dim landscape and with these new colors it just out does the map. If you keep the old scheme and just tweak the brown(Sud du Québec) to a more noticeable brown, then it would work out. Maybe you could even brighten the orange(Est du Québec) and it would look better too.

Has anyone done the colour-blind tests on this colour scheme?

Rather than tweaking the contrast, you could tweak the brightness of each coloured region. Having said that, only three ares need to be adjusted, and I'd suggest the following:
1. Make the green of Great North a shade or two lighter/paler.
2. Switch the colours of Est du Quebec and New Brunswick, and make the pink darker, and the orange a bit lighter.

It would help if the pale blue islands were exaggerated in size and make a bit larger - this would help them to become a bit more visible making it easier to work out where they belong (ie which bonus area)

Judging by your mention of pink and orange, I'd say you meant Sud du Quebec, not Est du Quebec. If so, I think you must be reacting to what I saw: Duplessis and New Brunswick are too similar to border on each other. However, this swap just means the Charlevois/Sept Rivieres border has the problem. I guess the problem is that Duplessis touches at least 5 zones. What if the swap was between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia? That way, Great North, Sud du Quebec, Est du Quebec and New Brunswick can be, in colour-blind view, alternating shades of that yellow-green colour, and Nova Scotia can be that grey shade.
Hmm, Iles de la Madeleine may still be misassociated, especially when it is so small (which you remarked upon).
Perhaps in addition to the colours, a change to the names of the zones could help: Duplessis could become Gulf & Islands and change Nova Scotia to Anglo-Maritimes. Here is my reasoning behind those changes:

  • I wanted to add "& Islands" somehow to "Duplessis", but that is a fair bit longer and would muck up the legend. Then I wondered why Maurice Duplessis, the architect of the "Great Darkness" and father of the Duplessis Orphans, was being honoured here. Apparently his name was given to a provincial electoral district shortly after his death in office. I, however, with the gift of a half-century of historical perspective, think we could step away from this tarnished legacy. So "Gulf & Islands" seems good to me. If someone wants to point out that P.E.I. is in the Gulf, we can depict the Confederation Bridge, the long-awaited fixed link to the mainland, much as the Canso Causeway linking Cape Breton to the Nova Scotia mainland has been.
  • For those of you not familiar with Canadian geography (and I suppose they will be few in this topic), the (3) Maritime Provinces are New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Add Newfoundland and Labrador, and you have the (4) Atlantic Provinces. New Brunswick is the only province which has declared itself officially bilingual and can be quite properly referred to as Nouveau-Brunswick, but again is a fair bit longer and would muck up the legend without adding much value. But with NB taken out, NS and PE could become the Anglo-Maritimes, a term I have just coined, so don't bother Googling it.

No - I was definitely referring to Est Du Quebec. It looks orange to me (but more yellowy-orange than the reddy-orange of Sud du Quebec).
The colours of Est du Quebec and New Brunswick should be swapped and adjusted to help differentiation for colour-blind players. ;-)

On a different note, I'm going to raise my concern about map ownership...

As per the mapmaking guidelines:
Despite two medals being up for grabs, one person must take responsibility for map image ownership and agree to the copyright agreement below.

Copyright Agreement
The author retains copyright on their work, and gives Conquer Club permission to use the imagery free of charge, for as long as Conquer Club sees fit on the Conquer Club website. Conquer Club cannot sell, lease, or lend the right to use the images to anyone else. The author swears that their map is their own work, or a legal derivative work and by submitting it, do hereby claim all responsibility for that being true.

I'd say the 'owner' of the map would be Unit, although Dolomite has pretty much re-done the entire map, and is seemingly in control of edits to it. I suppose it depends on how you decide ownership.

Unit drew up the rough draft with the bonuses & game play ages ago. To my knowledge, these have never been changed, only the eye candy has.

So in my opinion, which no one has to agree with, Unit should be considered 'The owner' while Dolomite should get the other medal for re-doing the entire graphics.

I'm sort of lost... Is the issue with the names of the areas or is it a geographical issue? One thing I wanted to bring up is if Iles de la Madeleine was moved out of the Duplesiss bonus, and was made to be like Alcatraz on the San Fransisco map, except you can attack out from it, with it having a bonus of like 1 auto deploy per round or something. Just a thought.

Sorry, my bad, I got muddled switching back and forth between the regular image and the colour-blind test image.
But I stand by my position that if the current colours of Gaspésie and Moncton are too similar, then your swap will only make Bas St-Laurent and Gaspésie too similar, though I suppose if it was made darker as you suggest, it could work out.

if gulf & islands is too long, then u can use golfe-et-îles for this french-speaking zone to emphasise that the islands are part of this bonus. adding the confederation bridge visually and calling nova scotia and pei anglo-maritimes sounds good to me. what do other canadians think?

part of the current problem is that the colour of îles-de-la-madeleine seems different from the rest of duplessis and looks midway between the colours of duplessis and nova scotia. there seems to be little reason for îles-de-la-madeleine to have a +1 auto-deploy. however, if it does, then it must start neutral.

can i suggest that one of the current mapmakers discusses map ownership with unit_2? the best outcome is that we have one clear copyright owner agreed among those who have had major involvement in this map. there is also one map medal up for grabs other than that for the owner; the owner needs to decide who receives the second medal.

I agree on the points you have made on the colors, but the island is shaped exactly as it is in real life, if we were to edit it at all it would be editing the real geography. To be clear, îles-de-la-Madeleine is apart of France, not Canada. So if there is a problem with seeing it without expanding the size of the islands, then we can just make it not part of any continent and have it as a port to cross the Gulf with.

In political terms, the areas are named as they are. A Change in the names would make it a populace map, and not a map based off the official political terms for the areas. The maps is based off of 2008-09 political names, and territory divisions.

There is no islands around the area of Duplessis besides Anticosti and îles-de-la-Madeleine. There would be no need to add '& Islands' to Duplessis for those two islands, or to change it to "Gulf & Islands". The other name change suggestions are not a relevant solution to this map because they are populace given names and not the Political names which are on the map.

I drew up the draft, game play, and territory names. Dolomite re-drew over the territories, the names, and added eye candy to the map. So the 'Official Copy Right' would belong to me, but the other metal would go to Dolomite for doing all the other work. The only problem is that OID did the XML, is there another metal for that?

I am very happy all of you are commenting, please keep them coming to make this map the best it can be. After all, myself, OID or Dolomite may have missed something.
