Hold up in the Main Foundry?

Postby Industrial Helix on Tue Nov 03, 2009 7:49 pm

First off, I understand that the mods here are all volunteer and I do appreciate their work... but it's getting a bit congested in the Main Foundry and nothing is making the move.

My American Colonies map has been sitting in the foundry for a month without any comments in regards to the graphics. In fact, I believe all parties concerned are happy with the graphics as they are, there has been a good discussion throughout the previous 18 pages of the thread about the graphics and they have been tweaked and adjusted accordingly. Apparently, many other maps are in a similar position... I believe Dolomite just sent out a PM to other mapmakers asking for support in regards to his graphics as he is waiting as well.

Is a specific mod responsible for each different stamp and its just slacking in one area? I know Mr. Benn has mentioned he's caught up with rl at the moment.

Anyway, I'd just like to get this American Colonies map done with so I can focus on the other maps I've got going on. It's been nearly a year since I started it.

It seems nothing is moving in the foundry... Main foundry is so full, it's also keeping the draft room stuck - I suspect there are several maps on the draft room that would be ready for the main foundry but won't get stamped because the main foundry is already so constipated with the current maps.

Yeah, I'll bet it is very difficult to find smart and intelligent people, who at the same time, have the required amount of time to put in. Most of people like that have full time jobs, and families that demand most of their time.

The last call for CC volunteers yielded no help to the Foundry. There has also be much retirement in the ranks of the "Foundry Assistants" whose numbers were 8 or 9 just 3 months ago now is only 2.

Many have been waiting for a Cartographers review, especially for graphics in the Main Foundry, myself among them. There is much virtue in patience. It is as important in this process as bevels, pixel widths, bonus calculations, and xml codes. But patience... runs thin over time.

Definitely with you. I offered to take up a map or two on graphics, but even with that the Foundry is way under-manned. I know real life gets in the way, but like you'd have someone sit your account someone needs to watch over the Foundry. Nobodies does a great job of trying to cover everything, but 3 isn't enough.

How does one go about becoming a Cartographer? Before Andy just asked them, so it is just up to Mr.Benn to decide when they need more help?

Things may feel like they've slowed up a little - partly because I've not been able to be as active around here as I like, and partly because of the way things have been reorganised....

A little while ago, I stickied all the maps that had been given gameplay stamps. Many of these are on the verge of getting graphics stamps too - but having them stickied may make them feel like they should be moved??

As for "foundry helpers", it has not escaped my attention that there is room for growth - particularly as there has been a slowdown in activity amongst the Foundry Moderators and the Foundry Assistants. All I can say in response to that, is "watch this space"....

It must be something in the dried-banana-skins I've been smoking :?

In plainer English, I'm hoping to fill another pair of blue shoes in the near future, and am on the lookout for more willing-and-able helpers ;-)

I was never a Carto and I don't want to be. I have neither the time nor the time.

I tried. But I got bored. This place is great for me since I have no other place to do this type of stuff.

No way. I can't think of anyone else besides WM... and he's saying that's not going to happen.

I can think of a few people, but I am not in the loop enough to really have a good guess.
the.killing.44 and DJ Teflon both are/ were foundry assistants and seem like they would be good. They are also not really people who have been in the foundry since the beginning so they would bring new blood to the moding staff. I doubt that people like WM would be picked just cause they have been around a while and if they really wanted it they would already be a mod. Just my 2 cents though.

Not me.

Incandenza is the best person for this. Whether he'd want to do it is a whole different spiel.

Here's a suggestion that came to mind... what if maps were called up for Gameplay and Graphics reviews similar to the way preliminary reviews go. I think it might serve well as an attention call to maps that need crits in those specific areas and likely speed up the process a little bit.

the best way to revive the foundry would be for lack to just let bigger maps go thru, and then dim would come back, he would revolutionize cc in terms of gameplay (yet again), and then people would get more interested in the foundry process, and we could find new people to be the cartos or whatever the blue title stands for.
