I agree with borat, that CrazyAnglican is the best contributor on his side of the debate. This discussion, I have found, generally dead ends on faith. Some have found it, some haven't. There the thread can end. Anglican, I am a C.S. Lewis reader, as well as the old and new testaments. I would ask that since I have read your holy books and favorite arguments, (faith) that you read the most recently fashionable atheist position: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (science). I admit he is shrill at best, and catty at worst, but to be fair, I waded through all that damn begetting in Genesis. I would be interested in your response.

What would you describe as Hell Jamie? I'm sure the one you use is different to the one in the Bible.

Oh I hate Dawkins so much! At worst he is worse than catty. But having said all that, he is an increadibly clever man, and one who speaks a lot of sense. I would find Dawkins more of a wade than Genesis. But by the nature of faith, nothing can really be disproved, as it is kind of belief without evidence. We'll know when we die!

Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris is the best contemporary text I've read that enters into this debate.

I highly recommend it, to both the believers and the nonbelievers.

Plus, it's pretty short. Even Ronaldinho, who I hear can't read, could handle it.

Dawkins shrill? That's an understatement! I've never got round to reading The God Delusion, and probably never will, because I doubt there will be anything in there that I don't already know - though I'm willing to be disabused of that point if anyone thinks there's actually anything new in there...

The problem I have with Dawkins is that much of what he says is relevant only to fundamentalists and hellfire & brimstone Christians, who are still a minority of Christians (though a noisy & rich minority).

I'd like to know, for instance, what gives the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury their supposed moral authority, and why they are allotted so much space in the media, but nothing Dawkins says ever really addresses them or their followers.
