Do you want these maps?

Postby cairnswk on Sun May 24, 2009 4:05 pm

Two projects of mine are in the Dead Bin....Jamaica and Gallipoli. Do you want these to be revived?

You've never released a map I didn't love every single aspect of, so, a unanimous yes to both :)

I think Jamaica is a wonderful looking map with some interesting game play.

Also I love the Gallipoli map, it is shaping up to be another Cairns master stroke. The game play on it appears to have more of your classic twists, which I love.

I hope to see them both.

So count my votes as:Yes......Yes.....YES

not so sure I dig the slavery thing on the jamaica map, but the gameplay itself looks cool and I'd be willing to try it

The WWII map sort of looks like a poor man's Pearl Harbor

Slavery was part of that history, no getting away from it.

Not sure what you mean here.
If PH was the USA's worst day in WW!!, then Gallipoli was one of the Entente's worst days in WW!.

the second map is especially text-heavy... there's not much 'map' in there.

well perhaps some of that can come out later, but for now i guess there wouldn't be many on CC who know about Gallipoli, so i see it as part of an education process during development also.
And this is one of my most complicated maps, because there are many options for starting positions.
No use just doing half the battle.

You didn't let us choose to keep one and bin the other ;)
I say keep Gallipoli but bin Jamaica. And I'm with oak, though there should still be a story on it.

Both maps present unique gameplay and are gorgeous (imo) graphically.

The biggest problem I see in the forge (set aside, of course, graphics ordeals) is a "lack of unique gameplay". With the number of solely geographical maps coming through the process, these two are a breath of fresh (and especially with Gallipoli, more difficult!) gameplay.

I know that a good number of players (myself included) desperately look forward to maps like Waterloo, Pearl Harbor, and now Gallipoli that you can't just hop on, look at, and kick ass. They require a deep amount of thought, strategy, and learning to be able to get through, and it makes playing them that much more fun and exciting.

Once again- please do not drop these maps!

Making them can't hurt anything. The more maps the better.

You may now make two selections from the options, so that you can keep one and bin the other. ;)

I voted no to both, simple because I think you can do better cairns. That however is just one opinion :)
What do you know about map making, bitch?

Gimil. Thanks for you one opinion.
However, i am not putting my skills as carto on the line here... and honestly, i am getting tired of hearing "you can do better"...can't you come up with something more original?
I simply want to know if the site wants to continue with the development of these maps as suitable subjects.
It seems however, you may soon be in the majority and they'll both stay in the dead bin. :(

i think i'll put in a yes for both. jamaica was always interesting to me although i don't think i commented on it cuz i was busy with school

gallipoli i never really took a look at, and at first glimpse does seem to be a "poor man's pearl harbor". that being said, i actually like pearl harbor a lot. with a reduction in the legend (if possible) and a little less clutter in the map area itself, it could definitely work out to be a thought provoking game

I never play your maps Cairns so I am unsuited to vote, but I'd say both maps need to come a long way graphically.

Graphics aside mibi, i'd say you are perfect to vote for whether the site should have these maps from content perspective.
The graphics will take care of themselves through the foundry process.

They are niche maps, as are most of your maps cairns. There is certainly no harm done to CC with two extra maps in play, so its really about what you get out of it. If you don't enjoy the process, don't do it. If you do, carry on, no matter what the map subject is. You have certainly earned the right to develop any concept you see fit.

I don't think he's looking for foundry approval, but for a broader opinion about these projects. Certainly cairnswk may carry on with both of these maps, but like any of us he doesn't want to spin his wheels making something that nobody cares for.

My two cents on these maps is that they are both too text-intensive for my personal tastes As mentioned above they are both niche maps, and its not a niche that I care to play. Right now I think the Jamaica map is cleaner and has more potential of being worked into something that I would be interested in playing, thus mine was a split vote.

On a more universal note, any and all of us have the right to develop any map they want to: rights as I perceive them aren't earned, privileges are earned. But I would argue (and I believe cairnswk feels the same way) that no mapmaker has earned the privilege of having any and all of his maps stamped and quenched, no matter how bad the map is. If an awful map is made by me, cairnswk, mibi, widowmakers, or anybody else, I would hope that the Foundry would step up and say something.

I'm in partial agreement with a number of people---however I think Jamaica could be developed into a fine map if it went in a slightly different direction. I think Jamaica could have a larger role in Conquer Club than the other map---namely because if we keep creating Caribbean Islands and surrounding areas---heck---there's a tournament idea in there for someone! We've already have Haiti and Caribbean Islands---Mexico is currently in production, and I still think Hispanola would work well as a map.

In summation---Jamaica, though niche based, I think could develop more of a place on Conquer Club, with a slightly different direction, than Gallipoli.
