David Beckham going to the LA Galaxy???

Postby Jamie on Sun Jan 28, 2007 5:04 am

How in god's name did a US based soccer team, where soccer is as popular as Hitler is to the Jews, get the best soccer player in the world, and pay him 250 Million over five years. The entire MLS organization isn't worth 100 million dollars, let alone 250 million. Where did they get enough money to pay a player the richest sports contract in US history. Sounds fishy to me. Also sounds like a ploy to popularize soccer to Americans. Guess someone, who ever is paying out that money, doesn't realize that soccer will never be popular in the US, when a 1-0 game is considered a blowout. Hope David Beckham likes playing in front of empty stadiums.

david beckham is not the best player in the world, he is way overrated, and getting old. hes probably the most famous current footballer though.

but thats like trying to get an american football star to england - i seriously doubt beckham is going to make "soccer" anymore popular in america. Hes going to have a miserable time spending his last few years as a footballer in america.

I'll say this right now. This thread should have been posted earlier. I've known about this for a while and I don't even follow soccer.

I agree with most of what you say. It's even worse than Sirius giving Howard Stern half a billion dollars.

its a popularity stunt.

The whole way the MLS is set doesnt suit what soccer is. From what if heard every team plays every team every season and the teams who win regional leuges go to play playoffs. Ity doesnt make sense to me.

If they followed the tier system then it would make it more enjoyable, as lower clubs get to play big teams only rarely. Which is why the english FA cup 3rd round is so special
Would you choose supremecy if it lead to isolation?

Yes I hate soccer, but I didn't say it should be stopped. I just said it's boring, and needs to be improved.

There will be lots of pictures of him and his wife, strolling around L.A., but as far as soccer goes, Americans don't care about it. It wouldn't matter who comes and plays here, we just don't care as a nation. I find it to be a boring sport. I watched almost the entire World Cup (out of curiosity) and just could not get into it at all.

If he's not the best, then why is he the only active Soccer player Americans have heard of?? Americans can't even name players on their own team, so if we've heard of him, he must be pretty damn good

Because he is the only current football player to be more famous for his private life than for his play on pitch. Ok, yes he is/was probably the best player in the world with the dead ball, but if he can't even make his national side than he is hardly the best in the world...

The MLS IS mostly a leauge for players past their prime, young players and guys who can't quite cut it in bigger foreign leauges. If anybody in MLS gets too good, they get sold overseas (this year it's Clint Dempsey)

I think this hurts MLS because even though it sells tickets, it doesn't help play AT ALL. MLS is based mostly on fitness, the teams that run the best usually win. So an older player, who puked in the WC because of the pace, is not exactly a good fit, marketing strategy included. I'd be suprised if he does well, simply because the style of play is so different. The Mexicans struggle to adjust to the pace, and they run more than most europeans.

I couldn't care less about Beckham going over there. At least he'll be surrounded by people closer to his own intellectual calibre.
