I always thought this was the greatest vapormap on CC... now it is being restarted and I am feeling uneasy ... hope it turns out as well as Beals envisioned ... and me. ;) Good luck.

I voted other. I think that you should scrap the gate, put the quote on the bottom. And put the name ontop of the curtain. Overall this is beautiful

I voted A, with the caveat that I like the title up top, hate the curtain for the quote, but think there should be SOME background to the quote. Have at a few ideas. Think Soviet.

personally, i think the gate at the top looks kinda strange. Like a floating gate.

Also 44, did you need the territory font i used? I think it was minion..

Yeah it's Minion Pro, came with my compy so it's fine.

That's a good point I didn't think of — the floating gate. I threw this together real quick, adding a red-brown glow to the quote. Still experimenting with backgrounds re: tack's comment, but maybe this noisy glow could do it …

Here's something I wrote in the thread ages ago, might work, might not...

Incandenza wrote:Speaking of the title... the wrought-iron-gate background doesn't seem very, well, "Iron Curtain"-ish... what if it were some sort of stylized Berlin Wall, concrete with barbed wire and searchlights, with the map title and a hammer 'n sickle embossed (more like chiseled) into the wall?

Seems like it could work the way you have it now, with the quote at the top and the title at the bottom.

I agree with the Incan. The "curtain" has more of a 1946 feel where the bars seems to bring me to the 80s. :)

I vote for this version.

You've come a long way in map-making, good luck with this. Hope to see many more come out with your name stamped on them.

Wasn't this in the main foundry?

This map is pure hotness, why is it still in the drafting room?

MrB has to move it out, it's got the idea/draft stamp ;)

Thanks for the support Neon :)

As for Inc and FP's sugg: I'm looking around — not quite sure about the searchlights, but I'm going through walls with barbed wire; seeing what works. Inner shadow is the carving effect you're thinking of by the way.

Even if there's no barbed wire, I just think something concrete and monumental works better for the spirit of the old USSR than the existing fence.

Curtain, looks more like a rug ;)
I voted for the texxt at the top and gate/fence/whatever at the bottom.
I thought this was ready for Beta a long time ago.

I certainly think it's a step in the right direction, especially if there was a hammer-and-sickle carved/embossed/reliefed in the wall (even if the map itself overlaps it a bit).

TNP, imagine the Berlin Wall, ten minutes after the concrete dried (i.e. without all the garish graffiti), or a thirty-foot statue of Lenin (5 years ago I happened to be visiting Petropavlovsk in Kamchatka and was astonished to see that their giant Lenin statue was still in the middle of the city square, whereupon I was informed that while all the Stalin statues in the country had been taken down, Lenin, being viewed as more of a Washingtonian figure by Russians, was left alone in many places), or public housing in East Germany. Imposing, totalitarian architecture and design philosophies, basically.

You might not be able to tell, but I was fascinated by the soviet union as a child (and continue to be as an adult).

And I concur with various above sentiments that at the very least this deserves to be in the main foundry.

Maybe spell out the name in bullet holes, i think that might look cool. I also think it might be cool if you give the names a little drop shadow...

Alright, now I get what you are talking about, Inca. That is a pretty good idea. I would go for either that or the fence right now, think either of them would look good on the map, although the stone wall might be a bit harder to pull off.

Re: IRON CURTAIN [I] - new carto | pg.17 titles...

Perhaps try making the fade of the stone wall a much more gradual thing so it sort of very slowly blends into the background. Right now it looks a bit abrupt still. The strange part for me is the font... it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the map for some reason. It looks a bit to sharp and crisp in comparison to everything else.

Definitely on the right track though. I like it much more than the curtain or the fence from before.

Yeah, the "The Iron Curtain" lettering looks like it was just darkened and laid on top of the texture (which is looks to have been). It would work a lot better if somehow you were able to make it looks like some poor asshole in a gulag had to chisel it into the concrete.
