How many maps are on the site that were made using GIMP?

I am currently using and lerning GIMP to make maps but I hear people doing all kinds of complicated things in Photoshop that either you cannot do in GIMP or I just don't know how to do in GIMP. The guide to making maps says that you can use GIMP but I was wondering if, in reallity, are the vast majority of the good maps that eventualy end up getting put on the site done in Photoshop?

The vast majority were made in photoshop, yes, but you can do it in GIMP, it's not impossible. There are plug-ins and addons for GIMP that you may want to check out and experiment with that may help you.
