luke, considering that this is your map, and your not really doing that much, it is your job to take peoples suggestions, and inform shakeycat, maybe this is why this thread isn't getting a lot of action, there isn't (probably) enough communcation between the front man and the person who is actually making the map

I have done what I set out to do. I'm too busy now to do much more. If someone is interested enough that they want the PNG, contact me.

You've just proved my point!

You've foe'd me because you cannot take critcism. How do you ever expect to get a map off the ground with an attitude like that? I had already stated I wasn't trying to be rude, we're here to help. But as you seemed to ignore everything I had been saying I decided to tell you what I thought in plain text rather than guiding you.

That is not the way to win over supporters, people are going to view these comments and decide they cannot be bothered, as the comments will probably not be taken on board.

Some of ther best comments have come from the moderators and the.killing.44, and your foe'ing them........who does that leave?
Even shakeycat's jumped ship!

Are you talking about me? Here is my response. I briefly foed .44 and LED for personal reasons. I have never willingly not listen to you comments but I had nothing to do with the the creation of the new drafts

Ok, I was wrong. You didn't foe me, for that I apologise.

Now lets get this map back on track. Start looking at involving Long Island into your map. Also, start up photoshop and have a play with it (NOT ON YOUR MAP! USE A BLANK CANVAS)
Look for some tutorials online and just play. This might sound stupid but you'll;

a) Be more likely to discover new techniques if your not worried about ruining your map
b) Now think about how you want the map to look.

With (b), try and include Long Island, one important aspect of designing a popular map is to appeal to the majority. I can almost guarantee that a map draft with the title of New York: Long Island, would get twice as many views as The Hamptons. This is because people know where long island is and so is interested, few people outside of New York have ever heard of it and so doesn't appeal.

By all means use a copy of a map you've found online, but rip everything out and just leave the basic outline. Now get to work. If you have questions about how to achieve looks then just ask.
I hope this goes someway to helping you.

My friend who will be doing graphics will get right on including long island into the next version, all of it, every last territory...

He used correct grammar and spelling ā€” nothing wrong with that. And sailor your posts about the "vulgar" don't make any sense. I suggest you stop with these postsā€¦

Anyway, I've talked with the maker already.

Well the first new draft is much better! You still have a long way to go but already it's looking better than it was. :D
I like the sea, there's something not right about the islands but I'm sure these will improve with further drafts.

How many territories are you planning to have? I think I count 37 so far... Can you get any more in?

Great work again!

Is the map meant to be historical?

I ask because the boats strike me as historical - circa 1800s. If you're aiming for a modern Long Island map, I'd try to update those.

Also - the bonuses seem high for so few territories. +2 for holding only 2 territories? I forsee a lot of unfair drops on this map because of that.

Good progress though.

i will fix the bonuses, and i'll try changing the boats (they probably wont come out too good)

Right - as this is effectively a new map, I'll split this into a new thread, and send the Hamptons bit to the recycling bin...

I've said this many times before, and you are free to ignore it if you want, but maps that focus on such a specific region tend to find less support around here than other maps. If I have a choice between spending time commenting on a map of Korea or a map of Long Island - and I am faced with that choice - I'll spend my time in the Korea map. And that's not to say that I've spent a lot of time (or any) in Korea, but historically and geo-politically it is more significant than Long Island.

That said, to make this work and the rally support you'll need to give us something original and exciting.

Whoa, this one is 100x better.

Regarding the comment from Oaktown, perhaps you guys could make it more interesting and appealing by adding different types of territories or bonuses to it. Think about what makes Long Island, Long Island.

For example, the Hamptons are super ritzy, Jones Beach has concert venue, throw a famous lighthouse in there, something to that effect.

To me, the random tall ships with random (albeit fairly amusing) names really add very little. Maybe put in some more famous ships that have docked in Long Island. Or, instead of ALL ships, add ports that connect to ships.

If you want to make it more exciting, you could add some game play variants, such as giving the ships the ability to bombard territories.

Right now, the map is zoomed out and there is a lot of empty space, that is currently filled by the ships that add little. Instead, what if you zoomed in closer, and gave more detail to Long Island, since it is the focus of the map. You should have no problem adding territories, as I know there are 100,000,000 little hamlets out there.
Alternatively, leave it here, but add in the southern part of CT. Find out where the ferries run from CT to Long Island, and add those in.

If there is one thing I can think of Long Island as being famous for, its the terrible transportation problems it faces. Why don't you add in the LIE or Commuter Rail system. Check out the USA Map Pack to see how to add highway bonus territories to a normal map. Get the Ferries going. I don't know if MacArthur counts as a "real" airport, but perhaps add that in as a separate bonus.

Just some ideas. Sailor really pissed me off with his spamming of the earlier draft, then I stumbled across this, and it looks so much better. Also, I think Led has the right idea by actually listening to the Cartos and other feedback, maybe you guys can make this work. Best of luck.
