It's not like someone got on here and started advertising "landgrab" or anything. It's a website directly related to CC. Also, how many people was she sending this too? Does it show in the PM the number of people this message was getting sent too?

I don't think Mandy is the type of person to deliberately spam anyone. Maybe she made a mistake by sending out the PMs, but I can't say for sure as I do not know what she had permission for. If she is guilty I think a spanking is in order and I am 1st in line to hand out the punishment ;) however I do not think she had any intention to do any harm to CC or the players of CC.

Its only relation to CC is that it was started by CC members.

But the point remains that it isn't competition, nor was mandy making any money in any way by advertising the site. I don't think it would be spam with or without mod permission.

wrong. no way lack said mandyb could spam up all of our inboxes advertising another site. that is absolute garbage. starting a THREAD is one thing. abusing PM's by spamming clan leaders/prominent forum members is not a thread, and is against the rules. absolute garbage, and relax with the flaming. we are remaining civil, why don't you try? mandyb broke the rules by spamming up our inboxes, and there is NO WAY it was approved by lack or twill or andy or whoever it is going to be blamed on.-0

Can we all take a deep breath. I don't think more than one email was sent to any individual from the description of the complaint. How about an apology, and keeping their ad to the thread?

it was sent to a several users by mandyb's own admission... that is pretty much spam. i know it hit my box and i was annoyed... as far as apologies go, that kind of went out the window with the "we had lack's permission to spam up PM boxes of clan leaders, etc, to advertise our own site." it just can't be true. period. the turtle poos on that type of behaviour...-0

Re: MANDYB - spam

Postby mandyb on Sun Dec 21, 2008 8:26 am

Hi guys
Wow, 3 whole pages! I'm frankly surprised at the outrage it has caused - I had no idea that I was doing anything that would be so offensive as to spark a thread, frantic PMs, thread searches and what looks to be a couple of people rather upset.
For that I am sorry.

Now, there were 34 PMs sent (I had mistakenly counted replies to the same people in the original total I stated.)
Replies aside, one pm only was sent to each person - some of these people I know from games, others are people with great sigs. Does this constitute spam? If it does, then I was blithely unaware of it.
As for permission - yes, as I said before, permission was given to advertise.
However had I realized the PMs would cause such distress to even 1 person, non would have been sent.
I assumed that if there was no interest then the pm would be erased with a simple click - much like I do when invited to games, tournaments or invites to participate in threads.

Come to think of it, I recently tried to encourage participation in a story thread that jiminski started some time ago - I sent many messages to a host of talented people on this site to encourage participation - some I knew, some I didn't, but all had style. These people were sent PMs repeatedly and though few replied, I had no complaints - was this also spam? :?
My intent in this instance was again, to encourage creativity and promote a little fun competition. Yes, it's good for pileofawesome to have the publicity but it's not the only reason I did it.

Anyway, I have spoken with the mods in charge and they have all the relevant info necessary to make their decision. I know this is grippingly, nail-biting stuff, and we're all on the edge of our seats, but I suggest we just leave them to it.
Besides, it's a beautiful day here in Spain. I'm off out for a walk to take in a bit of the invigorating winter air before coming back to decorate my tree.

Since this thread seems to be gathering quite a lot of attention, may I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and all the best for 2009. :D
I was going to send out massive amounts of Xmas Greetings via pm, but perhaps that isn't such a good idea afterall ;)

p.s.Thanks for the support guys, I appreciated it, truly I do - I hadn't quite realized there were so many knights in shining armour about...it gives me hope :D
Still, we all have better things to do than get bogged down in this ...........scrabble for instance; anyone up for a game later?

I did not even get a pm  , but after reading this thread I did go check out the site, and it is pretty cool, there is a clickable right on the home page that directs you straight to CC, so if anything this is a very good thing to get more new recruits to join =D>

I don't think she did anything wrong, but it will up to the mods, actually I found another site very close to CC and I ask a mod if I can advertise it, cause like this place if you refer people you get credit for it, and I was told I could but it wasn't advisable, Good Luck Mandy :D

To be honest I don't remeber discussing anything about sending mass PMs regarding another website with heavycola. If I did give him permission it obviously was a bad call as you can see many people don't like that. Just don't do it again.

Ok, if you made a bad call, no big deal, I have no intention of sending out more PMs about the site, although I'll assume it's ok to continue with the thread.

I'd also like it noted while I'm here, that I don't believe it's 'kosher' to misquote people or to continue an attempt to bait them.
I have attempted to keep this conversation civil and on an even keel - Owen has not.
90% of the posts I have read written by him anywhere on this site are consistently filled with sarcastic, snide and derogatory comments designed to bait and provoke - something I believe he has been warned about before...I'm sure on more than one occasion.
While it doesn't affect me particularly, I feel that such behaviour is nothing but detrimental to the site and it's members.

Owen, I have no idea what you are like in RL, but here, you come across as a meddling, busybody, gleefully intent on poking and prodding at people with the sole purpose of causing disruption and discord.
Time to just give it a rest I'd say.

start another thread if you have a problem. i welcome any mod to come view this thread, in which myself and a few others were openly flamed by your defenders, and i did not stoop nor resort to responding in kind. and why are you trying to make this about me? you are the one that broke the rules and was WARNED and then tried to pass off a comment by lack about another situation entirely as a comment on your own breaking of the rules!!! lack did not remember giving another member permission to do something similar, and you declared, "it's ok, i'm not doing it again." he didnt' say he didn't remember giving YOU permission. you broke the rules, you got warned, i did nothing wrong in this thread. if you have an issue, start a thread about me right here in this forum, and i'm sure i'll be just fine. you got warned, deal with it.-0

p.s.-maybe you can send a mass PM to a bunch of members directing them to the thread in which you try to have me tried and convicted... you seem to be good with the spam now.

wait, he isn't saying he gave you permission, he is commenting on another situation!!! this is the WORST APOLOGY by a member i have ever seen. is this even an apology or admission of guilt? how about, "wow, i'm sorry, i won't do it again guys. i had no idea that it was against the rules, even though it is clearly against the rules. you turn your semi-apology into a, "owen is mean in the forums" thread, *snicker*... guess what, you were wrong, i was right, i don't like adverts for other sites in my box, especially by people that have been around and know the rules. that doesn't make me mean! i never flamed you, i never stated anything that wasn't untrue. you however, have yet to apologize to the community for spamming up our boxes and breaking the rules. got the ruling, now waiting on the apology...-0

Owen, are you trying to angle for a moderator's position on this site or something? Why else do you feel it's your business to act like an authority here? I find your humour amusing much of the time, but in cases like this here, you come across completely obnoxious. Stop trying to be a moderator until someone makes you one.

once i received the PM in my box, it was my concern... the rules are clear and mandyb continued to act as if nothing wrong was done, going so far as to claim lack himself declared it ok... and at least i didn't flame anyone in this thread as i was flamed. i kept it civil, on point, and within forum guidelines.-0
