Drop all waiting games when player does not login for 3 days

Postby firth4eva on Thu Aug 14, 2008 6:40 am

Concise description:
  • Drop all waiting games when player does not login for 3 days

Specifics:
  • When a player fails to log in for 3 days all his waiting games are dropped(not including tournament games?)

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • It will stop potential deadbeats before the game starts

In the past I have had quite a few games waiting for players but not been able to log in for 3days and not been able to get an account sitter. It will save everyone the trouble.

Agreed although i'd do it as soon as a player deadbeats in a game and has not logged on since that last turn. So if i have 20 games active and i start deadbeating and i get kicked from a 24h game after three turns and i have not logged on since the first turn i deadbeated on that particular game, then i'd kick him from all 20 games.

N/A to speedgames

What i meant is that if a player has joined several games and gets kicked for deadbeating then if he hasn't really logged on since that first turn he deadbeated, that means he will probably not log on for all others and then deserves to be kicked in all active games.

If he did log on but is intentionnally deadbeating (Some people do that sadly), then do not kick him from all games, but just the one he deserves to be kicked on.

Is that clearer?

That's a different suggestion. This one is only regarding games that they have joined, but have not filled yet.

What if someone logs on, but has their settings such that they appear to not be logged on?

Wouldn't CC be able to tell if they logged in, regardless of whether or not other users can see?

I like the original idea about dropping games that are waiting.

The deadbeat idea is totally different and in my opinion has less merit.

The 5 minutes time span for speed games is convenient because the bottom of the forum shows all the active users in the last 5 minutes. However, since those who hide their online status can still play speed games, then a hidden status should have no affect. Besides, from what little I know about php software, admins can always see everybody who is logged on (whether they're hidden or not).

CC can tell. Your profile is most likely just set like that as part of the invisible setting. But CC still knows. If your a mod (or an admin, at least) you can even see the hidden users as online at the big list of names online in the index. They just show up italicized.

Here here! Great suggestion! This also prevents KLOBBER-style New Recruit farming. Which is good :)

Admin given the correct privileges can see everyone's online status regardless of user's choice to remain hidden, this is standard forum software, not just phpBB.

But this is irrelevant to the suggestion made ( a good one too).
The forum software is separate from the game software.
It is the game software which needs to know how long a user has not logged in for in order to determine whether or not to drop the user from the waiting game.

This is actually much trickier than it sounds for a whole host of reasons, so give it some time if it happens.

not really, is every login is stored in the database, the server would just have to run an hourly check to see who hasn't logged in for 3 days.

I thought this had huge potential, so I put in some code to see how many deadbeats it would prevent if we dropped waiting game if the member hasn't logged in for 73 hours.

So far only 3 drops out of 880 auto-kicks :(

I think that is probably because the games fill up before the person deadbeats. It is still a useful tool to implement but probably not very effective because most of the games will fill up around the same time (or at least in less than 3 days).

What if the player is just not logging in because he's waiting for them to start, or to get a notification from his email for when it starts so he can log in?

Sounds like a valid concern. Do you think that people would be more likely to just login on a daily basis for the sake of logging in if there were a big notice on the "Awaiting Players" page telling you that you will be dropped from your games?
