i was thinking of making them a little shorter, putting a black colour overlay on them at a low ocpacity to make them darker and then seeing how they look

Yes, try making some a little shorter. I think it would do the trick.

the southern forest looks better, and the top cont. colour is fine.

i'm not saying your map should look like mine, but see how my mountains look more realistic below...i spent days working and reworking those mountains
also i can see you have a similar style bevel going on now between the map island and the legend, correct?

I would start from there, and then work round clockwise until I had Green, Pink and Orange for a bonus of +6, with 3 borders to defend (Melaky or Menabe, A-M, Atsinanana). With a little work, I could expand into the blue area to get +9 with 3 borders (Menabe, Betafo, Atsinanana).

I agree... what about punching a hole in the mountains from orange to green? it could even be a one-way attack into green (with gimil's fun little arrow - you know the one). Other than that I think gameplay is pretty much ready to go.

LOL, i agree..........
Regards gameplay, im becoming incrasingly =worried that if you start in the top half of the board you have basically secured victory. You get the bonus 1 and move downwards with ease well others are scraping it out!
Also there will be a mad rush to get to the top of this map....Very worried
