Canadian Dictionary

Does anybody have a Canadian Dictionary? Preferably a full version rather than an abridged or concise version.

If so could you please look up the word "learnt" and scan it or take a picture and post it here.

Apparantly despite the fact that the word is in Australian, American and British dictionaries somebody is trying to tell me that the word doesn't exist in Canada and I don't believe them. If you have a Canadian dictionary and it's not there can you please post up the details of the dictionary too (maybe even a photo would be nice).

Hmmmm don't know. We say "learned" in the US.

lol yes I know that. It's not a case of if you say it or not. It's a question of is it real word. The American Heritage Dictionary has it listed, as does the Oxford dictionary and the Macquire Dictionary. Also at least 10 canadian websites use the word including government organisations, sporting organistaions, charities, newspapers and journalists. There is also an amature online Canadian dictionary that contains it.

Apparantly this isn't proof and is arguement that "I'm from Canada and I say it doesn't exist" is a good counter arguement.

I know "oot" and "aboot" are there.....and a fun additional description for "hoser" and "eh".

In fact arguments along the lines of "I'm a native speaker and I say it exists/doesn't exist" are among the worst one can imagine.

If the native speaker is a linguist with access to a really good descriptive dictionary and says this after checking it... ok. But then he'd probably formulate it in another way.

What, the Canadians say "oot" and "aboot"? I thought it was just the Scottish and very north English who said that. Bugger me. Learnt something new today.

EDIT: Just googled, and found a Canadian blog called "Oot and aboot". Wow.

My Canadian dictionary does contain the word "learnt". Unfortunately, I am still living in the 20th century and have no idea how to scan anything (although I do have a scanner) and not a clue how to download pictures from a camera (although I do have a digital camera).

On a side note, hoser is NOT listed. The root verb "hose" is listed, meaning "get the better of, especially by unfair means; cheat" So, like, don't be a hoser, eh?

Honestly, being fairly well read and edu-muh-kated, I AM amazed "learnt" is a real word...I thot that was one of those things you only heard in lowbrow skits....anyhow, I cannot find an online Canadian dictionary, but every dictionary I check has the damnable word in it.......

I post on this forum legitimately - I play conquer club too!

Or do you mean me on the other forum? I post on that legimately too and so does the guy I'm argueing with - even if he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I should clarify some stuff though.

He now claims that "learnt" is a word but that it is word that it is grammatically incorrect to use in writing (but fine to use in speech).

I have quoted Milton, Tolstoy and Shakespeare at him and he has rejected those as too old (they were grammatically correct when written apparantly but aren't any more ) and in the most recent development I quoted from the ruling of a Canadian Surpreme Court and made the point that if it is ok to use the word "learnt" in that context it is probably acceptable to use it on an internet forum.

I've obviously gone to too much work to win such an unconstructive and pointless arguement but I feel that the guy is such a trucking click head that when I finally get him to either admit that he's wrong or leave the forum that that will be my most satisfying internet moment in my life.
