Welcome to the March Map-ness Tournament! A few announcements right off the bat...

A link to the Tournament Bracket can be found below and in the forum's OP:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/13qjN0V90XlUwIbf0J_HISY485eSbFbo5/view?usp=sharing

1st round invitations (for seeds 64-68 only) have been issued. Expect to see 2nd round invitations sometime mid- to late- next week. Until then, why don't we all...

MEET THE FAVORITES:

CANNON DIVISION

1. shoop76: Mad props for the #1 overall seed... but shoop has something to prove in this tournament. His loss to musicalmaven in the round of 64 was the biggest upset of last year's tournament; and a title would be one helluva cure for that hangover...

2. aaronvollrath: Aaron earns a coveted #2 seed in his March Map-ness Tourney debut. Does he have what it takes to reach the Final Four or beyond?

INFANTRY DIVISION

1. *Pixar*: Once again, Pixar claims one of the top 4 seeds in the tourney. He'll be eager to improve on last year's disappointing campaign - an early loss in the round of 32.

2. ender_w99: Ender moves up from a 3-seed in last year's tourney to a 2-seed this time around. Will a higher seeding mean a better finish than last year's Sweet 16 exit?

CAVALRY DIVISION

1. Clanlord Carl: Good news for Carl: he improves on last year's seeding and is favored in his division to make the final four. Bad news for Carl: he may have to go through bobzimmerman in Round 3 (aka the defending champion) AND murphy16 in Round 4 (a final-four contestant last year).

2. dowian2: An impressive rise by dowian moves him from a 7-seed last tourney to a 2-seed this time around; and after last season's disappointing exit in the round of 64, one hopes he can only improve from here.

WILD CARD DIVISION

1. Ukey: The first-time participant Ukey makes an impressive debut, earning a #1 seed. If he brings the same intensity to this tournament he brought to the Escalating Championships, I'm sure he'll do fine.

2. molespe: Last year's impressive run saw #8 molespe upset #1 Pixar and make it to the Sweet 16. But this time around, he's a favorite, who won't be slipping under anyones' radar.

Looking forward to this year's event! May the conquering begin!

A summary of Round 2:

Of (32) match-ups, there were only (6) upsets (18.75%). For reference, that's nearly half as many upsets as last year's tournament (11).

All 1-, 2-, & 3-seeds have advanced. Incidentally, this means no 14-, 15-, or 16-seeds make the round of 32.

Of all of the 1- and 2-seeds, only Pixar and Clanlord Carl managed 3-0 sweeps, meaning the top 8 players in the tournament have a combined record of 18-6 (75%).

(3/4) 4- & (3/4) 5-seeds have made the field of 32.

Meanwhile, (2) 11-seeds, (1) 12- and (1) 13-seed are still dancing (RicardoCortinez, ncardoso, rudibach, & Jimmy V, respectively). Jimmy V has the largest upset of the tournament thus far, knocking off 4-seed ultraman, 2-1. Is he the proverbial Princeton of this year's Map-ness?

Expect to receive Round 3 invitations no later than Sunday evening.

Hello upsets! Round 3 was PURE MAP-NESS!

Congratulations to Tin Trumpet, ender_w99, & JJ41375 for making CONSECUTIVE SWEET SIXTEENS. =D> =D>

(7/16) matchups (43.75%) were upsets. Just (6/9) top seeds make it to Round 4 and (4) double-digit seeds are still dancing (props to massive underdogs 10 Charle, 11 RicardoCortinez, 11 ncardoso, & 13 Jimmy V)

(3/4) #1 seeds are still in the tournament. For the second year in a row, Shoop76 (this year's #1 overall seed) falls short of the Sweet 16. Meanwhile, (2/4) #2 seeds advance to Round 4. dowian2 and ender_w99 tally impressive victories, while aaronvollrath falls short against Charle.

Only Pixar & zipper66 sport perfect 6-0 records, making them the only undefeated players in the tournament.

Cannon Division underdogs went 4-0 in Round 3. That means the highest-remaining seed is #8 fuatpanza - who pulled off a MONSTER UPSET over #1 Shoop76. Well done! :!: =D>

The other divisions look something like a normal bracket - with at least (2/4) top seeds advancing to their respective division semi-finals.

Round 4 means we transition from best-of-3 to best-of-5 series matchups. Expect to receive Round 4 invitations no later than Wednesday night.

Conquer on!

Re: 5th March Map-ness Tournament [Round 4/7]

Postby Puddleglum on Fri Apr 21, 2023 2:40 pm

The Map-ness continues in a topsy-turvy Round 4:

(5/8) matchups resulted in upsets (62.5%).
Of all of the 1- and 2-seeds, just Clanlord Carl is still dancing; meanwhile (1) 3-seed & (2) 4-seeds advance to Round 4.
An 8- or an 11-seed is guaranteed a birth in the Final Four (as compared with last season, when (2) 12-seeds made the semi-finals)

Congratulations to the Elite Eight! =D> =D> =D> Let's preview the remaining contenders and match-ups...

CANNON DIVISION

(8) fuatpanza: After a colossal upset against the tournament's overall #1 seed, fuatpanza had no letdown, disposing of 13-seeded Jimmy V, 3-2. Now he takes on RicardoCortinez for a spot in the Final Four.

(11) RicardoCortinez: Of the (4) bottom-half seeds (9-16) entering Round 3, only RicardoCortinez moves on, beating Charle in a competitive, 3-2 match.

INFANTRY DIVISION

(4) 8LimbWorrior: Not only does he ruin 1-seed *Pixar*'s perfect record, he sends him packing with a 3-2 victory. One might call him an Elite Eight Limb Worrior ;) Now the 4-seed takes on squamps for a shot at the Final Four.

(3) squamps: in every round, squamps has missed his first batch of invitations. Will this good luck ritual continue - much to the angst of the tournament's organizer?

CAVALRY DIVISION

(1) Clanlord Carl: With *Pixar* & Ukey dispatched, Carl the Clanlord inherits the role of overall favorite. Will his dominance continue in a matchup against JJ41375 - fresh off an upset of 2-seeded dowian2?

(6) JJ41375: JJ is the only player in the history of the Tournament to reach consecutive Elite Eights. After thumping a 3- and a 2-seed to get here, a 1-seed like Carl won't scare him.

WILD CARD DIVISION

(4) Tin Trumpet: An upset over 1-seed Ukey moves Tin one step closer to a title than last year. But he'd best not overlook zipper66 - a fly that might let him down instead.

(7) zipper66: With the best record in the tournament (10-1), zipper has been tearing through his competition. A big upset over 2-seed molespe has him on the verge of a Wild Card Division Championship AND a Final Four appearance.

Round 5 begins this weekend! Conquer on!

Round 5 is in the books! Not quite the mayhem we've come to expect from previous rounds, but Map-ness no less!

We only saw (1) upset this round, with 7-seed zipper66 toppling 4-seed Tin Trumpet, 4-1.

Every player advancing to the Final Four came from the top half of contenders (the lowest-ranked being 8-seed fuatpanza); whereas only half of last year's Final Four were comprised of top-half seeds.

Only (1) of the top 8 seeds reaches the semi-final - that would be Clandlord Carl.

This is the first Final Four for every player remaining in the field.

Congratulations to our Final Four contestants and Division Champions! =D> =D> Let's preview the players and the match ups, shall we?

CANNON DIVISION

(8) fuatpanza (12-4): since upseting shoop76 in Round 3, fuatpanza has had the easiest schedule of the Final 4 contenders, defeating 13-seed JimmyV and then sweeping 11-seed RicardoCortinez; but he'll have his hands full against squamps in a best-of-seven fight for a finals birth.

INFANTRY DIVISION

(3) squamps (12-4): A monstrous sweep of 4-seed 8LimbWarrior propels squamps into the Final Four. Now a showdown against Cannon Champ, fuatpanza looms large, with a spot in the finals up for grabs.

CAVALRY DIVISION

(1) Clanlord Carl (11-5): Consecutive 3-2 victories over emilywink & JJ41375 have Carl on the cusp of his first Finals appearance. Up next is his most challenging opponent yet - and if anyone has a shot at shutting up 'The Mouth', it's probably a zipper.

WILD CARD DIVISION

(7) zipper66 (14-2): Bad news: he doubled his loss total in Round 5. Good news: he's only lost twice and sports the best record in the tournament. Now, he faces his greatest challenge yet - Carl the Clanlord. Will zipper fly high and seal the deal? Or will he close shop and head home?

The Final Four means the final format of the tournament - best-of-7. Invitations are out. Good luck, conquerors! 8-)

Round 6 is complete and it's onto the Finals!

(8) fuatpanza squashes (3) squamps by a score of 6-1 to reach his first finals. Meanwhile, (7) zipper66 ekes out a hard-earned, 4-3 victory over top-seeded Clanlord Carl for a shot at a chip.

Congratulations to our Finals contestants! =D> =D>

(8) fuatpanza (18-5): an easy path to the Final Four didn't matter, as fuatpanza demonstrated sheer dominance against top-tier opponent, squamps. He now ties zipper66 for the best record in the tournament and is just 4 wins away from a title.

vs

(7) zipper66 (18-5): An excellent, gritty win against perennial favorite, Clanlord Carl brings zipper66 to the brink of Map-ness and a shot at a title. For just the second time this tournament, he finds himself as the favorite. Will he button up a championship or let it fly away without him? (honestly, just too many zipper jokes not to share :D  )

Invitations go out this evening. May the greatest conqueror win!
