STORY:
This map is actually based on a Franz Kafka book. For years I thought it was something to do with WWII.
The Castle (Das Schloss to fluent German Speakers and Risk Players) is the story of K, who claims to be a Land Surveyor, sent by someone unknown, for some purpose unknown, to the Castle, itself an unknown quantity. What K is supposed to accomplish we never discover. Rather than a narrative that moves towards any substantive satisfaction, Kafka presents the reader with a series of frustrations, K trying again and again to progress his work, but never moving beyond the Castle's snowy environs.
The novel begins with K's arrival at the village that lies in the shadow of the Castle - and, apparently, under its governance. The place lies deep in snow, and the Castle is shrouded in mist, so that not even a glimmer of light betrays its presence. Kafka's descriptions of the place throughout the novel are almost unbearably evocative. The reader is brought to an inhospitable, almost-polar region, where there is scarcely ever light, and one feels the physical effort of struggling through heavy snow. This is a novel best read in deepest winter, particularly when the daily trials of working life are made acute by morning and evening commutes in shivery darkness.
The atmosphere and mood of the novel are what carry it - but they are hard to describe. Saying that, you will find yourself understanding them precisely, even if, like me, you cannot fully articulate what you mean. This is what Kafka does: he destabilises us by writing about the familiar, the banality of daily existence, but disguising it so it appears to us a strange dream or fairytale. When we close the pages we are returned to reality aware of all the feelings of hopelessness that we tend to shut out so as to carry on with our daily working lives. Kafka is the syringe that draws out the reader's blood, and then the pen that writes in it.
It is a mistake to view The Castle - and indeed The Trial, as many do - as being concerned with bureaucracy and unfair process. Such readings trivialise Kafka's artistic project, and are, essentially, reductive. Kafka writes about simple and important things: aloneness, pain, the longing for human companionship, the need to be respected and understood, sex, and the struggle of being employed.
This book will make you sad for the things missing in your life. The reader is forced into confrontation with basic human need. We bear witness to K's futile struggle for recognition and respect. The whole ground of his being is undermined by those who will not acknowledge his task or his right to be in the village. K seeks companionship (shacking up for a time with a woman who has a connection to the Castle authority) but cannot stand the company of his assistants, to whom he can be unkind.
And this is also a novel for the darkest days of winter. Kafka takes you away from his or her own life, with all its stress and secret desolations, only to return you, shattered, to a new reality in which you must confront those truths you'd rather forget. This is Kafka's greatest work, and the one that best lives up to his maxim that a book ought to be a hatchet to break the frozen sea within us.
RULES:
Each Round up to the Quarters, Semi-Final and Final will be 3x2 player games. Quarters and Semi will be 5x2 player games and final will be best of 7.
To survive, you simply need to win one of your 3 games.
Scoring will be 3 points for winning all 3 games, 1 point for winning 2 games, 0 points for surviving and winning 1 game. If you lose all 3 you are out of the tournament regardless of how many points you have amassed.
Scoring will be 3 points for winning all 3 games, 1 point for winning 2 games, 0 points for surviving and winning 1 game. If you lose all 3 you are out of the tournament regardless of how many points you have amassed.
The player with the highest cumulative points will get a bye in the next round. If points are equal it goes to the most points gained in the previous round then the one before that. If it is still a draw it goes down to who finished all 3 games first. To be clear, this is by time the games finish. So it's in your interest to play as quickly as possible.
The actual number of Round Hero Byes in the next Round will be dictated by the number of players remaining in the Tournament:
0-49: 1 Round Hero Bye
50-99: 2 Round Hero Byes
100-150: 3, etc.
If an odd number of players are left after that then the next highest scoring player will also get a bye.
Play continues until there are only 8 players left then it is a straight knockout in the qurters, semi and final. 5 games in the quarters & semi, and 7 in the final. If we go from 9 to 7,6 or 5 players remaining then the highest scoring player gets a bye like in previous rounds.
STRATEGY:
Stay Alive. Points mean nothing at the Quarter-Final stage.

QUARTER FINAL COMPLETE / SEMI FINAL DRAW:
Wow, that was an eventful Round. The Quarters were highly entertaining and contentious.
Culminating in me being told what I can and can't do in my own Tournaments, and how I should be dealing with any players holding up the rate of progress (-: Clearly that didn't get off the ground!
Highlights below:
- The 1st Quarter Final to finish is sooooo close! ViperOverLord the 14th Seed scraped through with a 3-2 Victory over the 13th Seed Profits. A Phenomenal effort from Profits, but, it's 'The Snake' that progresses to the SEMI!
- 9th Seed Aad0906 nails his Quarter Final, 4 games finished and he is 4-0 up versus the 12th Seed Q-Ello. That’s him safely through. Q-Ello is outta here!
- HMSPS - I'm unsure what SPS stands for, but, I'm 99% HM stands for High Maintainance (-:. In the Tail Enders Game, 19th Seed William Tennant goes down fighting. But, graciously resigns and this Quarter Final goes to High Maintainance SPS 3-2
SEMI-FINAL DRAW:
50 Started, 4 Remain, but only 1 will make it out 'The Castle' ALIVE:
- hmsps (15th Seed) V shoop76 (8th Seed)
- ViperOverLord (14th Seed) v aad0906 (9th Seed)
Good Luck for this Round Troops!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FINAL:
50 Runners have been whittled down to only 2 remaining alive inside 'Das Schloss'. But who can break free?, who can survive to become the CHAMPION of DAS?
ViperOverLord is on course to WIN his 2ND Survivor Series. In a close Semi, he KO'd his rival aad0906 4-1. It was a lethal demonstration of Survivor Series Risk in the Semi's.
In the other, Shoop76 faced off V HMSPS. It looked closer than it was but Shoop got an early advantage and he hasn't let go. It's going to finish 3-2. It's been that way for a few days, i'm sure HMSPS's resignation mail will arrive shortly, maybe even when I am typing up the Final Preview. Unlucky HMSPS.
