Pluto hasn't been a planet for a lot longer than this 'Pluton' debate. It was technically demoted around 2002 when scientists concluded that if a planet is smaller than its moon that it then isn't a planet.
The classification reached then was that Pluto and Charon was a Double-Planet, but it was swiftly ignored by the populace.
