Massage & Chiropractors....

Postby salvadevinemasse on Sat Jan 27, 2007 6:20 pm

How many of you have had a massage by a professional.. Plus how many of you have seen a chiropractors office? Or considered it?

I'm a massage therapist at a chiropractors office so ... I did 5 massages today, 2 yesterday and am tired at the moment but I thought I would ask out of my own personal curiousity.

I first received a professional massage many many years ago just for fun.

Later, a few years ago, I developed neck problems and started going to a chiropractor. I went for months and month, didn't improve at all, and eventually stopped.

Last summer I was convinced to go to a different chiropractor in the city where I now live. This chiropractor had a massage therapist in his office. I started getting gradually better, but I began to suspect that it was because of the message therapy and not the chiropractor. Meanwhile my partner was feeding me anti-chiropractor propaganda, which I more or less believed and believe. So I stopped going to the chiropractor and stopped receiving massages.

I do exercises and stretches and my neck usually doesn't hurt too bad. If I get to a really bad period with my neck again, I'll probably end up going just to a massage therapist, which I can get discounted through where I work now.

Also, my best friend is training to be a massage therapist, so I have a natural predilection towards them.

I think massage has a definite place in physical therapy. I'm very skeptical of chiropracty. I had major back surgery when I was 15 years old and 30 years later I still have a stainless steel rod in my back. It will be a cold day in hell before I allow someone to "adjust" me.

I frequently go to a chiropractor. I've had two professional masages, but I personally didn't like it as much as the chiropractic treatmeant. I have both back and knee problems, and both have been greatly helped by my chiropractor.

Massage therapy addresses a variety of health conditions, the most prevalent being stress-related tension, which, experts believe, accounts for 80%-90% of disease. Massage has been proven beneficial in treating cancer-related fatigue, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, low back pain, immunity suppression, spinal cord injury, autism, post-operative surgery, age-related disorders, infertility, eating disorders, smoking cessation, and depression, to name just a few. Here’s why:

Bodywork offers a drug-free, non-invasive and humanistic approach based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Massage has many physiological effects, such as:

Increasing circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.

Stimulating the lymph system, the body’s natural defense, against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer.

Relaxing and softening injured and overused muscles.

Reducing spasms and cramping.

Increasing joint flexibility.

Reducing recovery time for strenuous workouts and eliminating subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.

Releasing endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller. For this reason, massage is being incorporated into treatment for chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain.

Reducing post-surgery adhesions and edema and reducing and realigning scar tissue after healing has occurred.

Improving range of motion and decreasing discomfort for patients with low back pain.

Relieving pain for migraine sufferers and decreasing the need for medication.

Providing exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reducing shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion.

Contributing to shorter labor and reduced tearing for expectant mothers, as well as lessening the need for medication, minimizing depression and anxiety, and shortening hospital stays.

It’s important to note that there are some conditions where massage is not recommended. For example, massage is contraindicated in people with:

Certain forms of cancer

Phlebitis

Some cardiac problems

Some skin conditions

Infectious diseases

Your practitioner should ask you about your specific health conditions and determine if massage, bodywork or somatic therapies are a good idea. In some cases, the practitioner may need your doctor’s permission before providing services.

Hopefully this helps answer your question! Oh, btw- there are many websites that will tell you all of this. Just so you know!

Palm Coast Florida. The chiropractor I work for has 3 offices. Half the time I work in town, sometimes I'm in Port Orange and others I am in deland. It all depends on where they need me at that time.

Suntzu-
Go for it, research away! Anything you come up with let me know. I know alot but there are still things here and there I dont have answers for. I'd be very happy to see what you find out from any/all research you do. I'm very open to everything basically..and if you have a question for me in any way please ask away! What I dont know I'll ask someone whos been in the field longer and we'll keep asking till I get a true answer. okay?

LOL! I've done that so many times! My brother was massaging my neck and shoulders tonight. I'll tell you something though, Its good to get massages from your family and friends..but once you get use to a professional doing it most the time you don't want to go back to family or friends unles they have magic fingers. *Luckily my boyfriend and my brother both do :D * My mom is a little to light on the pressure though sometimes.. grrz.. I like medium pressure..not to hard not to soft and you have a happy Salva! *smirks* my family and friends all partly helped me with my national exam..they at least helped to keep me sane and to study and not to give up. I owe them alot. ttyl

BTownMeggy-
I know, there are alot of people who don't believe in chiropractors.. Have you sat down and talked to some of the people in the waiting room though? I've heard so many stories of different people who could barely walk even who went and saw both the chiropractor and the LMT and now they are so happy and they can walk without any pain. Its amazing the things you hear while working in an office. those clients btw who could barely walk because the pain was really bad.. We use an ultra sound machine on them and it helps alot according to the clients. Plus we use biofreeze, it helps alot too.. People who play sports alot use it if they are having spasms and stuff.

Also it could have just been the chiropractor you saw, try a couple before you decide to stick with just 1. Trust me on that one..Oh, and have them give you your X-rays because that way you wont have to keep having them taken. okay? Its easier on everyone that way. I think its awesome your work will partly pay for massage! Mine gives me half off.. I have to pay 35$ instead of 70$ if I want a massage. If you go back and get a massage again do the same thing you'd do with the chiropractor.. check a couple out before commiting to anyone. Its much easier if you know what you like and want and they follow directions you know? Just look for a really good one never settle..after all your paying for a service and if you feel they can't provide it enough then just find someone who can. It is business after all! We try not to take it personally if someone doesnt come back. okay?
Hopefully I said something here that might've helped you in some way.

Yes, I agree with you! Massage has a wonderful place in physical therapy.
Infact my dad wanted me to do physical therapy. However i'm the type who cringes when hearing lots of ouches, and seeing someone have a difficult time doing something. I just would want to do it for them you know? I'm to sympathetic to do that portion of the health care profession. I do massage alot of auto patients, infact I had 4 today out of the 5 I massaged. I think thats as far as I could go though is taking care of people who come in refered by a doctor. I couldnt bare the idea of watching people re-learning how to walk and stuff. it just isn't in me.
anyways, I gtg..

Any that i havent replied to tonight I will get to tomorrow and such.
Night everyone! Post as much as you want to! I love reading your posts!

hmmmm i got a massage for christmas 2 yrs ago and it hurt like a bitch when i was on my stomach, and she rubbed up my upper thigh, OWWY..... but later on it felt better and my whole body felt fantastic, the problem is your supposed to do stretches for a few days after its done, and a lot of ppl dont, so you feel like you have been hit by a truck

chiropractor-- i went there a few times and has worked every time. i went there when i was pregnant and it helped my hips widen in time for delivery so it hurt less... um..... i also went there when i was 10 because i slept on my neck wrong, and it was stuck to my left shoulder, i couldnt stand it up, and he jerked it in place, popping a whole bunch of shit and i was cured! so i recommend it to everyone, even newborns

I have had both...the massage just for fun while on a cruise (nice!), and a good bit of chiropractic over the years. It works for me...I can feel when my back is out of whack and need to be "cracked".

Now, the Chiropracters who say they can cure diseases & wish to replace traditional medicine? Well they're wackos. ;)
