but have a question how does the adjacent fort work on this map from the starting home base? all men would die if only were able to fort one spot?

When you take the Ring of Fire in front of a slave quarters starting point, you can advanec troops to the Ring of Fire and attack adjacent terts. however any troops left in any Ring of Fire will disappear when your get to your next turn.
