For a brief period of my youth I lived in Western Kansas and the people there were fond of saying "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute and it'll change." This trite bit of small-talk fodder is the inspiration for my latest tournament. The winning team will have made it through seven rounds of alternating "hot" and "cold" maps and will be crowned "Western Kansas Small Talkin' Champs." For the first round, match-ups will be determined by highest seed against lowest seed based on a teams combined score (minimum combined team score of 2500-ish please). But here's the twist. After each round the winners as well as a decreasing number of "wild card" teams will advance. From the 2nd round onward matchups will be randomly determined by random.org. The "wild card" teams will be the ones who A) won a single game in the round and B) had the greatest total number of game rounds played throughout that round. Game round totals reset with each new tournament round, and if there are not enough teams who won a single game "wild cards" will be based on total game rounds alone. If an additional tiebreaker is needed it will be a coin flip. Freemiums are welcome but you must keep two game slots reserved for this tournament at all times. Please have your partner confirm if you sign up together, and if you don't have a partner we'll try to match you up with one. All games will be 2:2/sequential/escalating/chained/sunny, and rounds will be best of three. Without any further ado, let's look at the details for each round.
Important New Rule
Effective round two, any team that misses a turn will be ineligible to advance to the next round via the wild card. Of course you will still advance if you win two games in the round, but you can not be a wild card team if you miss any turns. There were entirely too many missed turns in the first round and they really slow the entire tourney down. Thank you for your understanding.
Round One: Cities (32 Teams)
Hong Kong
Montreal
Cairns Metro (if necessary)
Who advances? The 16 winning teams plus 8 "wild cards" for a total of 24 teams.
Round Two: Small Countries (24 teams)
Portugal
Iceland
Philippines (if necessary)
Who advances? The 12 winning teams plus 4 "wild cards" for a total of 16 teams.
Round Three: Regions (16 teams)
Middle East
Great Lakes
Dust Bowl (if necessary)
Who advances? The 8 winning teams plus 2 "wild cards" for a total of 10 teams.
Round Four: Large Countries (10 teams)
Brazil
Canada
Australia (if necessary)
Who advances? The 5 winning teams plus 1 "wild card" for a total of 6 teams.
Round Five: The Extremes (6 teams)
Africa
Arctic
Extreme Global Warming (if necessary)
Who advances? The 3 winning teams plus 1 "wild card" for a total of 4 teams.
Round Six: New Maps (4 teams)
Indian Empire
Greenland
WWI Ottoman Empire (if necessary)
Who advances? The 2 winning teams only. No more "wild cards" but the would be "wild card" from this round gets to choose the third and potentially deciding map (from among those used in this tournament) for the Final Round.
Final Round: TBD (maps to be chosen from among those used in this tournament)(2 teams)
Map One: Chosen by Team One
Map Two: Chosen by Team Two
Map Three: Chosen by Round Six's would-be "wild card" (if necessary)
That's it, thanks for your consideration and good luck!
