Erik the Red (c950 – c1000) was a native of Norway and the founder of the first European settlement in Greenland. Erik's family left Norway, exiled on account of manslaughter, and they settled in Iceland but Erik was himself exhiled around 982 for killing two men. For three years he sailed around and explored the southern part of a somewhat mysterious and little-known land. When he returned to Iceland after his exile had expired, he brought with him stories of "Greenland", deliberately giving the land an appealing name in order to lure potential settlers. In 986 he left Iceland with more than 20 ships and around 400-500 people. He arrived in Greenland with 14 boats and an estimated 350 colonizers.
As other explorers, he looks like he is eating unripe gooseberries and presumably his long unkempt hair was red.
Although the settlement eventually disappeared, it opened the door to centuries of occasional explorations of the area and colonization attempts by northern Europeans. Eric the Red's son was Leif Ericsson, who went on to become one of the first Europeans to sail to North America.
Can you be the person who comes out on top after exploring Nordic Countries, Iceland and Greenland?
