Welcome to the inaugural NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision tournament, which will replicate the 2011 college football season as closely as possible -- with the exception of that BCS bullhonkey. A lot of credit goes to Flexmaster33, whose college hoops tournament inspired this tournament.
FORMAT
1 vs. 1 play
ELIGIBILITY
Freemiums? You betcha! Each week will consist of four games (plus overtime if needed), so make sure you can keep up with that pace. It shouldn't be difficult, especially if you can handle the 6-game week of the hoops tournament.
TEAMS
The FBS consists of 120 teams in 11 conferences. I am taking my beloved Fresno State, so that leaves 119 openings.
MAPS/SETTINGS
Each player will choose a home map (the only restriction is no beta maps), spoils, reinforcements and fog. Sequential and auto deploy are mandatory.
DEADLINE
The college football season starts Sept. 3, and since we will mirror that, Aug. 26th will be the last day to sign up. Hopefully we'll be full long before that.
SCORING FORMAT
Each ConquerClub game will represent one quarter of the football game, earning points for the two teams as shown below. The four quarters are added up for the game total. If the game is tied after four quarters, another game will be sent out with the overtime scoring rules (below right).
REGULAR SEASON
The college football regular season consists of 12 games played over 14 weeks. That means you will have two bye weeks during the season. The exceptions are conferences with championship games and teams who play Hawaii on the road, for which the NCAA grants an extra game. Schools who play FCS teams will have that game replaced with one against another FBS team.
RPI numbers will be kept in a spreadsheet throughout the season. The formula is calculated using your record (with more weight given to road games), your strength of schedule, your success against Top-25 teams, and your win margin. At the beginning of the season, the Top-25 will consist of the players with the 25 highest CC ranking, adjusted by me after each week. The RPI will fully determine the top 25 after the fourth week.
THE POSTSEASON
As I hinted at the beginning of this post, the BCS has no place among right-thinking people. Instead, our postseason will go the way I think it should be done -- with both a playoff bracket and bowl games.
PLAYOFF BRACKET: 16 teams will qualify for the championship bracket: 11 conference champions and 5 at-large bids, made up of the highest-ranked teams that didn't win their league. That means the only way to guarantee entry into the tournament is to win your conference*. You might have finished No. 16, but the Sun Belt champion is No. 21. He goes and you don't.
*Since the NCAA has a rule that bowl games must choose 7-win teams over 6-win teams, the conference champion must have 7 wins to advance to the championship playoffs. In the unlikely event of a 6-win conference champion, that conference will lose its automatic bid.
Each conference has slightly different tiebreaker rules, so if two teams tie for a conference lead, we'll go to those.
BOWL GAMES
For the other 104 teams, the regular bowl schedule will be available, with each bowl hosting similar-ranked teams. The 7-win rule is also in effect for bowl games (6-win teams can still get bowl games, but since the NCAA requires bowls take 7-win over 6-win teams, your chances go down, and you might play a worse opponent).
