Week 13 match reviews

Stoke vs. Blackburn
Stoke extended their unbeaten run against Rovers to six Premier League games. But missed the chance to make it a fifth consecutive home win against Blackburn, a streak that started in 1965. Neither side looked like winning and neither side did. Stoke 0-0 Blackburn

Bolton vs. Everton
David Wheater (pictured) had the fasted sending off in the Premier League this season. Everton took the lead in the twelfth minute - Leon Osman moved the ball out to Leighton Baines on the left and he played it in first time. Fellaini got ahead of the Bolton defence to poke home from close range for his first Premier League goal of the season. Things turned from bad to worse for Bolton when Wheater was sent off in the 20th minute for a challenge on Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. A poor touch by the former Middlesbrough defender took the ball away from him and he jumped in on Bilyaletdinov on the halfway line, leaving referee Michael Oliver no option but to show the red card. Despite this Bolton equalised on the half hour mark to stay in the game at half-time. Mark Davies played a lovely through ball for Ivan Klasnic. He got the better of his marker and Tim Howard's outstretched leg couldn't stop the equaliser. After the break, 10 man Bolton took the lead in the 49th minute, a well-worked free-kick saw Eagles curl a low effort around the wall and Tim Howard's dive to the left was futile. Bolton made it 3-1 in the 64th, Eagles found his second when he was left one-one with the keeper and despite driving his effort straight at Tim Howard an unfortunate deflection off the keeper's chest left the ball to trickle in to leave Everton in trouble. Everton nearly pulled one back but Jaaskelainen made a good double save on 71 minutes, first blocking a shot from Cahill before recovering to make a second save from Saha with the rebound. Everton will be felt hard done by to lose 3-1 (Points Tally 188-117) but football isn't fair. For strange facts, Everton haven't won at the Reebok since '08 and Fellaini's goal was his third against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium. Bolton 3-1 Everton.
Image

Chelsea vs. Wolves
Chelsea continue to try and claw their way out of the relegation zone after a boredraw with Wolves. (Points Tally 27-27) Chelsea 0-0 Wolves

Man Utd vs. Newcastle
Man Utd started off well and Hernandez (pictured) believed he broke the deadlock on 10 minutes but his goal was ruled offside. Newcastle fought their way back into the game toward the end of the half but they were goalless and the break. After the break Man U came out of the traps flying and were quite lucky to take the lead. Steven Taylor had fouled Hernandez to win a free-kick just outside the box and, although the Newcastle wall blocked Rooney's set-piece shot, the England striker was quickly onto the rebound. His volley went deep into the Newcastle area before ricocheting off Steven Taylor and then off Hernandez into the net. Newcastle tried to fight back but they couldn't find the crucial equaliser. They had a penalty turned down when Ben Arfa went down after a Ferdinand tackle but the assistant's flag stayed down. Man Utd 1-0 Newcastle.
Image

Norwich vs. QPR
A game that started off slowly wasn't lit up until the half hour when Norwich began to push and were rewarded in the 39th minute. Holt, who moments earlier had seen a header from Morison's delicate cross cleared off the line by Derry, forced the ball into the net following a teasing left-footed cross from Hoolahan on the right-hand side. Norwich will feel 1-0 wasn't a fair reflection with the header cleared off the line but QPR did have a penalty appeal turned down but referee Mark Clattenburg well-placed to decide no illegal contact had been made.
Image

Sunderland vs. Wigan
The Lactics broke the deadlock in 11 minutes, after a penalty. Victor Moses was tackled in the penalty area by Larsson and, despite the Swedish midfielder's protests, referee Kevin Friend pointed to the spot. Gomez calmly stepped up to send Westwood in the wrong direction and grab his second goal of the season. Wigan doubled their lead before the end of the half, after an absolute faff. The Sunderland keeper lobbed the ball back to his defender but it came off his knee and McArthur was alert to dispossess Brown. He played the ball across the area to fellow substitute Di Santo (pictured) who, with Westwood out of position, had the simplest of finishes as he slid the ball into an empty net. Paws1610 would need the pep talk of life-time to bring Sunderland back. Sunderland responded soon after the break, Sunderland's top-scorer pounced when Al Habsi fumbled Bendtner's rather tame shot into the path of Kieran Richardson. Sunderland equalised on the 68th minute, when Brown rose above the rest to head home Larsson's cross. Sunderland completed the comeback, and took the lead, in the 79th minute, former Man Utd midfielder, Richardson, bicycle kicked Jack Colback's cross. Sunderland rounded the game off in injury time when Bendtner's startling run left everyone clueless including the goalkeeper. Sunderland 4-2 Wigan.
Image

West Brom vs. Tottenham
A dull game with a dull result. West Brom 0-0 Tottenham.

Arsenal vs. Fulham
Fulham started off brightly but Arsenal provided them the goal in the 15th minute. A sublime ball by Murphy bounced off Riise's chest inside the Arsenal area and Vermaelen could only watch as his attempted clearance somehow ended up in the back of his own net. Fulham continued on top for the rest of the half. Credit going to Chris Baird (left) for keeping on van Persie (right) on a tight leash. The second half was fairly dull and Arsenal did have a sniff of an equaliser but Moussa Demble found a winner for Fulham. The former AZ Alkmaar player saw his 20-yard attempt take a deflection off Diaby but the Emirates' weren't going to award a second own goal. Andy Murray will have been disappointed to watch Arsenal slump to a 2-0 defeat. In Arsenal's first non-French squad in six years. Arsenal 0-2 Fulham.
Image

Swansea vs. Aston Villa
Swansea and Aston Villa played out a sombre 0-0 draw as the game was overshadowed by the death of Wales manager Gary Speed. Speed, who won 85 caps for Wales, was found dead at his Cheshire home on Sunday morning. A pre-match minute of silence at the Liberty Stadium spontaneously gave way to respectful applause and chants of "there's only one Gary Speed". Shay Given (pictured) who played alongside with Speed was in tears before the match. Swansea 0-0 Aston Villa.
Image

Liverpool vs. Man City
Liverpool started off on the front foot but Man City broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. David Silva's corner picked out Kompany's (pictured) near-post run and the ball glanced off the Belgian's shoulder and into the top corner. They doubled their lead just 14 minutes later, City cut through once again when Aguero exchanged passes with Silva and his stabbed effort beat Reina at his near post. Liverpool bit back in the second half, when Adam's shot, which looked like it was going well wide, deflected off Lescott and past Joe Hart. But it was too little too late. Liverpool 1-2 Man City.

12/06/11, Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea refuses to go down without a fight. Coach CMC has stated that his team has looked rather flat throughout the campaign and he readily admits that the chances of winning the premier are looking low, but he refuses to see Chelsea get relegated, stating, "Chelsea has been a part of the Premier league since the 80s. We have one of the biggest budgets, and some of the best players. This season has been a disappointment and we want to assure our fans that we are currently trying to sort out our differences and weaknesses. Chelsea will not, as long as I am coach, play a game in npower Championship!!" This is true. He will never coach an npower championship match, but don't be fooled, that's not because this club absolutely won't be playing for the championship next season.

BREAKING NEWS

Serreski has been axed by the board of directors at Arsenal due to a ban from FIFA. The board were coming from increasing pressure from the FA and they hoped he would return in time for their fixture against Everton. No spokesman was available for Serreski or the Arsenal board who do declare they don't know why Serreski has been banned other than "it must've being serious". Soccerghost is expected to replace or we could have a small managerial crisis.

Week 14 Write-ups

Newcastle vs. Chelsea
Two sides whose season needed some ommph met as Newcastle were beginning to fall adrift in the relegation fight while Chelsea were maintaining their chase on QPR to stay safe. Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. A Ba header from Peter Lovenkrands' cross that hit the post and a flicked effort from the former left Petr Cech backpedalling into his own net. Newcastle doubled their lead just 10 minutes later when Drogba headed into his own net from a Cabaye corner. Newcastle found a third in the second minute of added time in the first half, Shola Ameobi's 20 yard strike went off the post and in. The second half contained as much energy as a plank of wood and the half finished as it started. Newcastle 3-0 Chelsea.

Blackburn vs. Swansea
Two mid-table clubs both probably too far down to start a mount for the title but not safe from relegation met. Blackburn started the game off brightly and Sinclair should have at least put his effort on target when he was through on goal against Vorm in the 14th. But Blackburn did break the deadlock in the 38th, Yakubu received the ball up front, but he waited for Givet to overlap and then smacked the Frenchman's cutback into the top corner. Blackburn continued the attacking emphasis bin the second half but Swansea's back four kept the ball out of the penalty area. Swansea then went on to equalise in the 70th, Wayne Routledge's shot from the right was palmed away by Paul Robinson and Moore was on hand to crash the ball into the back of the net. All in all a fair result. Blackburn 1-1 Swansea.

Man City vs. Norwich
Both these sides lied in the top half of the table and couldn't be written off for the title yet. Norwich broke the deadlock in the 26th, Morison who climbed above Gael Clichy at the back post to head in Marc Tierney's cross. The game dulled down after that and wasn't reignited until the 68th when Morison found his second. Robbing Kolo Toure down the left before firing a speculative 40-yard volley which Joe Hart; incorrectly, thought it was going wide ended up sneaking in the far post. The game seemed to be in a state of shock after then and refused to do anything else. Man City 0-2 Norwich.

QPR vs. West Brom
Two clubs, both needed three points, for very different reasons. QPR were involved in a battle for 17th with Chelsea while West Brom could call themselves title contenders with a few more wins. West Brom took the lead in the 12th, with a breakaway goal, after Long scored from inside the six-yard area following a fine cross by substitute Odemwingie. West Brom doubled their lead in the 18th, Morrison tumbled in the area under a challenge from former Albion defender Gabbidon. Brunt disposed of the penalty as expected of him. West Brom were scoring for fun by the 27th minute when Jerome Thomas lobbed advancing Radek Cerny after Morrison's through ball. West Brom put their feet up for the rest of the half and Ben Foster had was pleased to have not being called upon in the opening 45. The second half started off poorly as QPR's attackers had lost all faith and West Brom's attackers were happy with the lead they had established. QPR's manager, Crarg, sensed the West Brom defense had become slack with little to do all game urged his attackers on and Helguson found the net in the 73rd. Joey Barton pounced on a loose ball after Jamie Mackie had lost possession attempting to thread his way through the Albion defence, and the former Manchester City player delivered an inch-perfect cross for Helguson to head home from six yards. But it was too late for QPR to mount a comeback. QPR 1-3 West Brom
Image
Helguson has now scored six league goals this season

Tottenham vs. Bolton
Would the Trotters continue to trot up the table at White Heart Lane or would Spurs deny them to cross the gulf to Fulham as they had their own problems with the looming relegation zone. The game was very drab for the opening half, and the crowd still very solemn after the 2 minutes remembrance of Gary Speed. Spurs created a few chances late in the half but Jaaskelainen denied Bale. In the second the Trotters accelerated to a sprint and Robinson was first to Chris Eagles' low corner and his improvised flick beat Brad Friedel at the near post. Spurs tried to fight back and were denied a late equaliser when Defoe was denied by Cahill's kneecap off Modric's corner. Tottenham 0-1 Bolton.

Wigan vs. Arsenal
Wigan smashed their way into the lead at the DW Stadium in under 12 minutes. As Caldwell's header was to powerful for Wojciech Szczesny, going in off the post. This was the right start for foot of the table Wigan while Arsenal top half position was definitely not safe. Arsenal bounced back though and after many attempts found an equaliser before the break - Arteta, the Spaniard, as his right-footed shot beat Al-Habsi, with the ball passing through the Wigan keeper's hands. After the break the game slowed down and up until the final quarter of an hour the only thing to report on was Arteta's speculative strike from 35 yards out that was closer to the corner flag. But Wigan were pushing for a winner and were rewarded 7 minutes from time. Diame's strike was prodded away by Szczesny and substitute Di Santo lashed home the winner. Wigan 2-1 Arsenal.
Image
Arteta has scored three goals since his August move from Everton

Aston Villa vs. Man Utd
Aston Villa were at one stage top of the league but seemed to have lost that edge and Man Utd were fending off local rivals in a mid-table battle. Aston Villa may feel they should have taken the lead early on but Emile Heskey should have done better when he headed over the bar from three yards out after Richard Dunne had steered the ball towards goal from a corner. Yet Man Utd failed to punish before the break as Given making a crucial save from Nani's header. In the second half Villa broke the deadlock in the 49th, James Collins' header edging past the fingertips of Lindegaard and give Villa the lead. But it only lasted two minutes when, Phil Jones, playing in midfield, the versatile 19-year-old timed his run into the box to perfection to confidently stroke home Nani's nicely-flighted cross. Man Utd then began to push for a winner but were denied up until the 73rd minute when Valencia's 35-yard shot dipped under the crossbar. United could have had more but Guzan was determined to keep the deposit at one goal. Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd.
Image
Phil Jones scored his first career goal in his 63rd senior appearance

Everton vs. Stoke
Both of these sides were sinking toward the relegation zone at kick-off. And it was no surprise, that the drop zone was looming, with how the game started. Neither side struck at target in the opening 30 minutes. Then things changed. Matthew Etherington's corner was headed out to Whitehead and his snap-volley was turned in by Huth in the 39th minute. After the break Everton began to push for an equaliser and could have got one but Diniyar Bilyaletdinov fired horribly wide. And the rain put either side off shooting for the rest of the game. Everton 0-1 Stoke.
Image
German defender Huth scoring the only goal of the game

Wolves vs. Sunderland
A boredraw - neither side shooting at goal, nevermind on target. Wolves 0-0 Sunderland. (All Six Maps Drew)

Fulham vs. Liverpool
Fulham were beginning to pull clear at the top of the table while Liverpool were fighting for a top half finish. It took the game quarter of an hour to heat up but soon became a blazing inferno. Murphy beat Glen Johnson on the edge of the 18-yard box and Reina embarrassingly spilled the midfielder's low shot. Dempsey reacted quicker than Daniel Agger and put Fulham in front with a simple, close-range finish. Liverpool mounted their own attacks for an equaliser but Mark Schwarzer kept out a 10-yard snapshot from Andy Carroll. Once again after the break, the game took 15 minutes to react. Fulham doubled their lead in the 63rd minute, Dempesy cut in to the line of defense and his strike struck the underside of the crossbar and went in. Then came the controversy. When Spearing was shown his straight red on 71 minutes, playing the ball first but then making heavy contact with Dembele. Murphy put the resulting free kick in the back of the net and the match in the bag. Dempesy got his name on the scoresheet in the 76th, with his long-range getting the better of Reina. Fulham 4-0 Liverpool.

Friday Fixture List. Week 26 Fixtures.

Saturday, 25 February 2012
Chelsea v Bolton
Newcastle v Wolves
QPR v Fulham
West Brom v Sunderland
Wigan v Aston Villa
Man City v Blackburn

Sunday, 26 February 2012
Arsenal v Tottenham
Norwich v Man Utd
Stoke v Swansea

No fixtures last week due to 5th Round FA Cup. Liverpool are playing in the Carling Cup Final on Sunday 26 February so they aren't playing in the Premier League. Everton would have played them but can't. Still looking for a reserve for Wigan.

If a reserve for Wigan is not found by the next fixture list, Saturday, March 3rd. All matches against Wigan that haven't been played will be considered a 3-0 walkover. This will be the policy for all who bow out from the tournament starting today.
