1984 (George Orwell) Map - VACATION PENDING PERMISSION -

Postby blue sam3 on Mon Oct 20, 2008 12:40 pm

I decided that we need a map based on this great book. After much playing around with a base map I found, I decided to start off simple, and just add borders to it, (don't worry, it's public domain, go here for the permissions), and then redo it based on suggestions from the community.

Stats:
44 territories (8 Eurasia, 5 Eastasia, 10 Disputed, 5 Oceana (SE), 4 Oceana (SW), 12 Oceana (N), 21 Oceana (Total)
7 continents (3 standalone, and 3 which combine to form a larger continent)

Future Changes:

Current Version (V7):

I absolutely loved this book. I would definitely play the map, I'd fully support you if you were to make this map. It should be very interesting. =D>

I was going to ask where the pigs were, but then remembered that was a different book

22 territories is probably a bit on the small side, and the attack rule (only attacking through disupted areas) provides a lot of dead ends and bottlenecks.

Are the red arrows supposed to indicate 1-way attacks? America, Austrailia and the Death Isles look unconquerable :?

Look in the 'planned changes section below the map, I'm going to change the arrows, I just forgot to change it in this version. I've added one more territory in Africa, and may add more later. I might make up some more disputed areas later, to reduce the bottlenecking.

Also, I might make an Animal Farm map later

Seconded!
I fully support this map though. Fully.

I have no idea how that will work... It would be pretty small like doodle earth though, wouldn't it?

The map?

I think that you've left waaaaaaayyyyyy to much space behind. I'm certain that you'll hear about it soon from the pros too. I think it would be best if you filled as much space as possible with game area. If you must have dead-space, maybe try filling it in with some explination to immerse the user into the fatasy... and allow them to really appreciate the map. Imagination!

Very good idea to make a 1984 map.. however, I think East Asia should be bigger. And India looks a bit weird. Ideally, the three factions would balance each other out in reinforcements, since they were equally balanced in the book?

I fully support this map, seeing how we lost the classic map.
The draft seems good, but what's in 1984? From what I remember : there's not a lot to go on...maybe you could include planes etc. I dunno, it's a while since I read the book ;)

What about giving some territories rocket bombs, allowing them to bombard other powers territories?

My biggest concern is that this map doesn't convey any sort of 'Big Brother' aspect of the book.

Yes, there is mention of bits of the world and so on, but the things that stick in my head are the Ministry of Truth, the Propaganda Machine... If I wanted to play on a 1984 board, I'd want to feel an overwhelming sense of paranoia... I think the board needs some way of being able to subvert Big Brother...

The book was less about conquering the world, and more about conquering the mind...

Maybe you can have a central part of the map for the burning of books ? This is a foundermental part of the story and its not included in the map.
Telescreens/cameras on the borders of each territory would be good too.

WAR IS PEACE

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
Territories called the Ministry of Love and Records Department need a small place on the map.
DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER

DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER

Good luck with it.great idea =D> =D> =D>

Do you prefer the above map, V5 or a combination of the two?

Any other suggestions?
