Mafia Island

Map Name: Mafia Island
Mapmaker(s): thehippo8
Number of Territories: 20
Special Features: None
What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made: I believe that there is scope for more simple maps. Aside from their universal appeal and good game play, they are great for variety in speed games.

Also, there's little African material and this little Island off Tanzania has a rich history. It was strategically placed in the Silver trade and more recently (second world war) the British saw it as strategically important.

It once was the property of the Sultan of Zanzibar after he wrested from the Portuguese, who sold it to Germany in 1890 during the ‘scramble for Africa’. In 1915 the British Army took control of Mafia after skirmishing witha force of German and Tanzanian askari in the coconut plantations of Dundani, Mafia’s highest plateau (just 50 m above sea level). The final battle took place in a grove of mango trees, named thereafter asmwembe vita (the mangoes of war).

The assault on the island was precipitated by Britain’s need to establish a base on Mafia from which to launch attacks on the famous destroyer Konigsburg, which had taken refuge in the Rufiji Delta after the outbreak of hostilities in the First World War. The destroyer had been on an official visit to Dar es Salaam at the time. The reconnaissance flights mounted from a makeshift pontoon runway on Niororo Island (30 km north of Mafia) proved to be too long, with much fuel consumption wasted on the flight to and from the Delta. The aircraft were used to ‘spot’ the ship and provide accurate information for ranging guns on the British warships holding position in the Delta.

After the War Britain administered Mafia under martial law until 1922, whereupon it became part of the British Administration in East Africa and not part of the Protectorate of Zanzibar, that remained under the Sultan of Oman.

Today Mafia is a district of the Coast Province of the Republic of Tanzania. It is also the smallest electorate with fewer than 20,000 voters for a single member of Parliament.

I am wondering whether to make this a period piece in which case it could become more comples or just leave it simple - I prefer the latter.

Please excuse the draft image - it's my first attempt with Gimp after 2 hours of playing (weak grin).

Oh, and Mafia Island also has Dwarf Hippos!! Well, maybe?

nice to see you as map maker :D

I think 20 regions is too few. it gives only 2 regions in 8 players game...
your post contains also nice part of island´s history - maybe try to implement history to the map. this would gives you also more regions...

good luck.
PS: if you need a little help with GIMP I can help you. but I am afraid that my graphic skill is still poor... :)

Have you read the GIMP mapmaking tutorial I wrote? I think it could benefit you.

I read it ages ago but before I had gimp  so it'll mean more this time ... thanks!

My current question is about gameplay. I know that graphics are important but the best graphics in the world won't save Mafia Island if it doesn't work conceptually or isn't interesting!

Thanks Oneyed, let's see where it takes me - hard to write about a process that I've never seriously tried to involve myself in before!

I think 20 regions is too few. it gives only 2 regions in 8 players game...

I find this interesting. I guess it's a matter of personal taste! My target audience is the speed gamers rather than the teamseters, but Doodle Earth is considerably smaller (and hived considerably larger!).

your post contains also nice part of island´s history - maybe try to implement history to the map. this would gives you also more regions...

I'd like more feedback on this. If I were to increase the size of the map there could be bonuses for getting villages on top of reagion bonuses? Also I could have a "pop up box" showing the site of the final showdown battle for Mafia Island as a separate area (like there is in Peloponesian war)? But a part of me likes the simplicity of a classic map and I doubt making the map bigger just for the sake of it will make it any better, or for that matter any more popular!

good luck.

Cheers, the offer is very kind and I may take you up on it!! One question I have, how do you switch between layers after you have created them (ie to delete a layer in the middle without deleting the whole thing)!?

Select the layer you want to delete in the layers window and click the thing that looks like one of those tubes that mario goes through (I think it's supposed to be a trashcan but that's what it looks like to me).

I made an error with the install. Fixed that and found the layers window and I'm away ... ish.

Great tutorial Natty, the user could do with a few tweeks! Oh, and I cheated at the end with the borders, that didn't quite happen, but I reckon the image is too small!! Anyway, this is just a conceptualisation stage so let's see if Nyone even wants me to continue!

yes, let´s see :). for me this proces gives me gladness when I see how map looks better and better, but sometimes it is pain to satisfy to everybody....

I am afraid it is not personal taste enymore. look here viewtopic.php?f=241&t=162480 and debate about number og regions...
thehippo8 wrote:I'd like more feedback on this. If I were to increase the size of the map there could be bonuses for getting villages on top of reagion bonuses?

do you mean to have villages anad regions? so 40 regions in all? it would works fine, I think.
thehippo8 wrote:Also I could have a "pop up box" showing the site of the final showdown battle for Mafia Island as a separate area (like there is in Peloponesian war)?

this is good idea. I want to do it in Punic Wars map (but I had not enough space). go for this - there would be two maps: one strategy map with regions and villages and second real combat map in "pop up box".
thehippo8 wrote:But a part of me likes the simplicity of a classic map and I doubt making the map bigger just for the sake of it will make it any better, or for that matter any more popular!

but when the map is too small (ie. has too few regions) the start of game is too much build on lucky. when player will have only 2 regions there is big chance that he will be eliminated before he start play...

natty´s tutorial(s) are great and they helped me much. but feel free to ask me for help :)

notice: I am quite new here, I have a little experience with map making, I did not finish any map yet, but I´ve read some interesting talks about creating a map - so some my notices are not realy "my", they are recommendations of skilled map makers ;)

Just keep on working. Even if this map doesn't happen it'll give you experience for your next one.

I'm going to come back to this map when my skills improve a bit more ... for now I'm starting a new Island style map called Corrigador. Not forgotten this and will come back to it!

Why is this map sooo small? Start bigger?
