Electoral College

Postby Minister X on Tue Aug 16, 2011 10:40 am

The USA Presidential election is starting to heat up. Will CC have a game ready for the event? Here's an extremely rough draft:

It's too bad XML can't handle complex electoral math (e.g. combinations adding up to 270); the next best thing is to make regions of roughly equal electoral value. Then there are two ways to go: 1) let them all be distributed at the start (except the candidates) and use the usual victory conditions, or 2) start about half the territories (the more swing regions?) neutral and make owning any 14 of the 27 the victory condition.

We can make sure that in a 4-or-more player game no one gets more than one of DC, Utah, Massachusetts and Illinois, and that with fewer players each gets at least one.

Bonuses can be based on regions we draw in as "continents" (i.e. west coast, plains, mountains, midwest, deep south, mid-atlantic, and northeast) or we could just increase the usual 3-4-5-etc for territory count to a more liberal (!) progression, such as 4 no matter what, 6 for 6+, 10 for 9+, 14 for 12+, etc. The latter would have to go along with the option where half the terits start neutral.

How do I know Romney will be the GOP candidate? I just know. :o

I think there are better map ideas out there than is unfortunately. :) Also, the map you are using for the base is old---haven't the numbers changed because of the recent Census?

I like simple maps.
Longevity ends November next. I would expect the map to vanish.
Not worth discussing, however.
As for me being able to "do better" - perhaps I've missed the point of the Melting Pot. I'm just floating a barely-formed idea in order to get a sense of interest in the topic and ideas to work on. Anything much more developed I'd post in the Drafting Room. Have I misunderstood? I am new at this.

I think it would be better to do a generic Electoral college map that isn't based on an election that hasn't happened yet. Also that will help it stay relevant in years to come.

I believe he means you can come up with a better idea for a map. Which I agree with.
